    To her—whenever I came dejected,

I smiled, and the pall of my weariness lifted—

To her who read my face and my memory,

And what I suffer between ink and paper.

So horses of passion journeyed through my arteries,

Azdī in their panting, never wearied by racing ahead.

They duel with the wind; their hooves are a song,

Fashioned, like this face, from disquiet.

Between me and you lie aged sorrows—

I hid them among the searing griefs I concealed.

I kept them secret and buried sorrow in my liver,

As embers whose fires set my pupils ablaze.

So, in an age of ingratitude, I fashioned my rhyme:

A cloud—so drown in poetry and take your evening draught.

And how could I deny a hand that put forth leaves of radiance

In poetry’s beating heart? This is not in my nature.

To you, O one who, when I came and wearied her

With my sigh, shone forth in the hour of dusk,

And spoke to me with the sweetest that

A heart can bestow, and gestured with her right hand toward the horizon.
