مستحيلٌimpossible ، وكلُّand every عذبsweet thing محالunattainable
O my father, I have a question for the letters:
Oh father... I have a question for the letters
An impossible one—and all that is sweet is beyond reach.
Impossible, and every sweet is impossible

فحروفيso my letters قوافلcaravans ورِحالand saddles
For ten years, sorrow has been spinning my poetry;
For ten years, passion has spun my poetry
So my letters are caravans and saddles.
So my letters are caravans and travels

Poetry puts forth leaves in my mouth, in Arabic;
Poetry sprouts in my mouth in Arabic
Within its flanks are defiance and onslaught.
Between its sides, soft and gentle

Its meter is a seething legion of sleek steeds,
Its meter emerges boiling from the parchments
And its rhymes are a banner and blades.
And its rhymes glistening like swords

It read the palm and the bewildered faces,
It read the palm, and the confused faces
And the corners, and what the shadows had enfolded.
And the corners...and what the shadows folded

ورسوماًand traces تحثوheap up عليهاover them الرمالthe sands
Then they appeared as a mass of rock and thornbushes,
So it was evident bitterleaf and wormwood
And traces over which the sands heap up.
And diagrams on which the sands urge

And directions intermingled, then grew far apart,
Faces intersected, so they flirted
And their south and north faded away.
And its south and north faded away
حدّثوناthey told us ، وأسرفواand went to excess عنabout هواناour love
فلماذاso why لاnot تصدقprove true الأقوالُthe words ؟
They told us—and spoke lavishly—of our love;
Tell us, and indulge about our disgrace
So why do the words not prove true?
So why don't the words prove to be true?

كأبيهlike its father .. لهfor it تتوقyearn الجبالthe mountains
That the peregrine's mother bears a falcon,
That the mother of falcons gives birth to a falcon
Like its father—the mountains yearn for it;
Like its father.. for whom the mountains yearn

That an arak branch lives on, crippled,
That the Arak branch lives like a sword
While the palms die, tall as they are.
And the palm trees die while tall

ولماذاand why لاnot تزأرroar الأشبالthe lion cubs ؟
So why does a sword not beget a sword?
So why doesn't the sword beget a sword?
And why do the lion cubs not roar?
And why don't the cubs growl?

O dawn of questioning—such is my Lord's way:
Oh morning of questioning, the tradition of my Lord
Perfection belongs to none but Him, the Majestic.
Nothing but He has the majestic perfection

يبتديbegins مولدٌa birth .. ويدنوand draws near زوالa passing
When ears of wheat fall to the earth,
When the stalks of wheat fall to the ground
A birth begins, and a passing draws near.
A birth begins..and demise draws near

They told us; they did not lie, and we learned,
Tell us..they didn't lie and we knew
After much toil, that life is a contest of changing fortunes.
Afterwards why "life is a struggle"

And we grew weary; the earth closed in on us—but
And we grew tired "the earth narrowed around us" but
Despite this, there are hopes deep within us.
Despite this..in our depths there are hopes

Indeed, a mother, O my inspirers, who bore you,
That a mother who gave birth to you
Still has men within her to answer.
Didn't cease to have men who can answer
