Love has grown old; the qayṣūm and wormwood have withered.
Love has grown old, and the yarrow and wormwood have curled.
And torment has put forth leaves within your breast.
And torments have put forth leaves between your ribs.

How could it not? Those proud brows, before which bowed
And how could it not, when the proud noses before which
all the worlds, now pour out their tears for separation.
the worlds bowed have their honor poured out upon the deserts?

And how could it not, with the bright swords hanging lowered,
And how could it not, when the white swords bow their heads,
and victory only a drunken song and a proclamation?
and victory is a drunken song ... and a proclamation?

O you drowning in grief’s ashes, I am wearied
O you drowning in the ashes of sorrow, it has wearied me
that the lamps between your eyes should gutter out,
that the lamps go out between your eyes,

that resolve in the gravest trials should rust, as rusted
that resolve should rust in the great ordeal, just as did
the mirrors and the keys within your palms.
the mirrors and keys in your palms.

O you drowning in falsehood’s promises, we were numbed—
O you drowning in promises of falsehood, we were numbed
a promise, and a door standing open onto nothingness.
by a promise and a door open onto nothingness.

Fifty years, sailing over thorns,
For fifty years, over thorns have sailed
our skins, while the free heart lies slaughtered.
our skins, while the free heart lies slaughtered.

Fifty years—incantations and murmuring,
a riddle whose hidden secret stands exposed.
a riddle whose hidden secret lies exposed.

We stitch flowers and a rhyme into stone—
We stitch flowers and a rhyme into rock,
a bereaved rhyme whose two lovers are silence and wind.
bereaved; her two lovers are silence and the wind.
وأنهرand rivers الخوفfear تجريflow فيthrough مفاصلناour joints
وفوقand above أهدابناour eyelashes تُمسيpass the evening التماسيحthe crocodiles
And rivers of fear run through our joints,
And rivers of fear flow through our joints,
while crocodiles settle at dusk upon our eyelashes.
and atop our lashes the crocodiles pass the evening.

Yet today a moon rises from our loins;
And today a moon emerges from our loins;
in its splendor, the wounded one forgets sorrow.
through its splendor, a wounded one puts sorrow out of mind.

O master of silence, in your eyes are questions,
O master of silence, in the eyes are questions—
melancholy—and today the answer lies before us.
mournful, and today the answer is set forth.

If there is rust in the heart of the one I loved,
If there is rust in the heart of one you have loved,
a hymn of praise to God will polish it.
then glorifying God will polish it.

Our bodies may have died, yet they have risen again;
Our bodies may have died, yet resurrected
our remains still harbor a spirit in their depths.
are our remains; a spirit still lives in their depths.
