If drought spurns you, stretch out a hand;
If drought afflicts you, extend a hand,
And if generosity seeks you out, be more generous.
And if generosity calls you, be more generous,

And pour love's pure water upon the thirsty;
And pour upon the thirsty the nectar of passion,
Do not leave the yearning one's mouth bare.
Let not the mouth of the desirer remain bare.

The envious will multiply, so weave for them
From your overflowing heart the loveliest cloak.
From your overflowing heart, the finest response.

فالصخر لا يؤذيه إلا الندى
Be a cloud above them, and a hymn,
Be above them like a cloud and murmuring,
For nothing hurts the rock but dew.
For only dew hurts not the rock.

Darkness rages in its unbelief,
The unjust throng in their disbelief,
Yet it does not deny the Farqad star.
Yet they cannot disbelieve the shining stars.

فأول الأمجاد أن تُحسدا
The envious will multiply; do not grieve,
The envious will multiply—do not grieve,
For the first glory is that you are envied.
For the first of glories is to be envied.

Had you not been a face with its own purity,
Had his face no splendor,
The face of the expanse would not have appeared black.
The face of the horizon would not seem dark.

Into its dim prison when it sings.
Into his cramped cell, if he sings.

O you, the voice we long for,
The people of ruin did not leave Ahmad alone.
The people of evil have left no (Ahmed).

They spoke—and how much they spoke!—yet it did him no harm.
They said, as they said, and what did it harm
Who, O pure-voiced one, can erase guidance?
Him of pure voice who wipes out right guidance?

Does what the lad says hurt the sun,
"Darkness"—if the young man's eyes are inflamed?!
When the lad is bleary-eyed?!

The expanse of the horizon as verse, and be master.

In their ignorance they have shut the doors,
But God's door will not be shut.
But God's door will never be shut.
