وكيف أُنشدُ يا تاريخ ما صارا
How unbearable the shame! Where do I begin with shame?
How hard is disgrace, where do I start with disgrace
And how shall I sing, O History, what has come to pass?
And how do I recite, O history, what has happened

همِّي فتحمل عنّي الثلجَ والنارا
Where can I find an intoxicated language to load with
Where can I find a language, to carry
my anguish, so it bears snow and fire for me?
My concerns, so it bears the ice and fire for me

From where, O nation I dowered with my radiance?
Where, O nation I perfected, do I find
I watered her with rivers from my tender youth.
I quenched it with the ripe juice of my youth as rivers

بِكراً وكانت قوافي الشِّعر أبكارا

I gave it a free, throbbing heart and rhyme
virgin—and the rhymes of poetry were virgins.
And rhymes of poetry were chaste

They were panting beside Omar al-Mukhtar,
It was roaring with “Omar Al Mukhtar”
but after him they found no chosen one among the people.
But after him, it did not find a chosen one among the people

They were leafy upon the thresholds of home,
It was blossoming on the thresholds of the house
and today the knights of passion have squandered the home.
And today the horsemen of love lost the house

O my letters, do not blame me: I am human.
O my letters, do not blame me, I am human
I see the wall that never trembled lying in ruins.
I see the wall that did not collapse from it

I see sorrow in people's faces; I grasp it—
I see sorrow in people’s faces that I hold back
a fang traveling through my heart, and claws.
A ire that travels in my heart and claws

So how can I keep silent about a wound that torments me?
So how can I be silent about a wound that hurts me
And how can I write excuses after today?
And how can I write excuses afterwards

Where shall I begin? The whole earth is desolate;
Where do I start, all the earth is dreary
its horizons stretch out as shadow and veils.
Its horizons stretch, shadow and curtains

The faces of the green hills have turned grim;
The faces of the green pastures have become arid
after the date-cluster stalks, the palm blossom has become cactus.
After the meadows, the vegetation has become yellow

My poems from the companions of the road, secrets

It tended to your wound, enraptured
and drew dreams and ideas from it.
And drew from it dreams and ideas

The blast of the wild winds grows fiercer, O my homeland,
The violent winds blow hard, O my homeland
yet the pole of your white tent has not swayed.
And the promises of your white tent did not last

A sword and a minaret did not protect it
both were its defenders through the nights of trembling.
They were its supporters in the nights of tremors

"إن كنت ريحاً فقد لاقيت إعصارا"
Both would say, while the pitch-dark gale was grief:
They used to say, and the brutal gale was painful:
“If you are a wind, you have indeed met a hurricane.”
“If you are wind, you have met a storm”

The steed stumbles, and there is confusion in its eyes
it returns to begin a journey through tragedy.
It starts again on the tragedy, a journey

Their insistence intensified only to make me

More stubborn than the waves of darkness, insistence

I grow in esteem in the oppressors' eyes.
The more I increased in the eyes of the tyrants, defiance

Yes, I have lain low, and this is the dawn of my caravan
it has surged to wash disgrace and shame from me.
To wash away from me the shame and disgrace

But I never forgot the wound and revenge
