From which river did you drink silence and dread?!

And your mothers turned sorrow into hope.

From where did you spread this humiliation? Never has

the land of falcons known a vulture or a partridge.

In your eyes I see Sa'd with his banner,

and a blazing legion of Salah al-Din.

I see possibilities of a meaning I once did not know,

nor was it conceivable to those who held you dear.

Who are you? In your palms I read an epic

buried alive, and horses that shrouded a hero.

As though the universe had never come to you in supplication,

even once, nor been enfolded in whispered confidences, nor celebrated.

Who are you? I glimpse Antarah al-Absi

in your cheeks, vying with horses and spears.

How has this head of yours bowed, O moon,

whose proud eyes we once held up as an example?

I said nothing; I bowed my head, dejected.

And I kept my head bowed in shame at what he said.

How has this head of yours bowed, O moon,

whose proud eyes we once held up as an example?

Who are you? I said nothing. He was killing me

with every radiant letter, whenever he asked.

I said nothing; I bowed my head, dejected.

And I kept my head bowed in shame at what he said.
