For ninety centuries, I have been drowned in love for you.

After this lifetime, how can I awaken?

O face that I have loved,

Where does a yearning lover begin his tale?

For ninety centuries, love for you has been my banner,

And for eyes like yours, torment delights.

Ninety years, and the poems are unfurled,

And night is bleeding, and the heart a blaze.

I never said, “O my beloved mother, I have been betrayed

By my heart”; for the heart of one lost in love is true.

I never said it... I know that loving you is a duty,

And in this struggle, obligations rest upon me.

The whole earth used to close in upon me,

And the souls of those who kept faith with love grow constricted.

And this face remains my journey's goal,

And the letter is free, and the song races ahead.

And poetry still has its banners turned upside down,

And the verse has spiders and cracks within it.

They race toward poetry in legions,

One after another, and each has been betrayed by success.

And you came above my horizons, the midmorning sun,

And upon me were lightning flashes from the robes of light.

    في كُلّ حرفٍ نضرةُ .. ورحيقُ

    And my poem is resplendent with your face's purity;

In every letter there is freshness and nectar.

And you came, O face of life; upon my lips

Are trees with roots in the east and west.

And I came; I had not broken my princess's pledge,

For a pledge is binding in the language of hearts.

O vigor of poetry, when I shake it,

And the ordeal is terror, and the orbit is cawing,

The words turn wooden; their sweetness becomes

Sorrow—ah, the bitterness when I taste it!

My beloved mother, they boast of their dutifulness,

And dutifulness in this age is filial disobedience.

I saddled poetry's back; I told you, “Mount.”

And you mounted, and the stubborn colt was noble-bred.

For ninety centuries, its resolve has not slackened,

So it seems to have been created from my burning anguish.

And today, O river of majesty, our sword

Is wood, and our great horseman is hindered.

New thinking has not changed my stances,

For the distance between the two stances is immense.

How could I sell you to darkness and depravity?

Two opposites: pitch-dark night and sunrise.

They fall ravenously upon your wounds, not knowing

That al-ʿAyyūq lies beneath the noble lady.

    وَرَقُ العُداةِ بأرضنا محروقُ

    The enemies' clamor and their massing have not harmed me;

The enemies' paper is burned in our land.

Nothing harmed me but your sons, grinding one another down.

What happens when one brother grinds down another?!

In every calamity, our glory is assailed

In civilization's name, by a traitor, a heretic!

O my Arab world, where is the Arabness

From whose lineage came al-Ṣiddīq and al-Fārūq?

O my Arab world, what Arabness is this,

While the first qibla is blood and gasping?

O my Arab world, what Arabness is this,

With hatred in the heart and depravity for a cloak?

O my Arab world, everyone claims

A friend's truthfulness, yet there is no friend.

You squandered your great principle; nor is there, in

The age of dirhams, any market for heroism.

Set aside these titles; your faith is one,

The faith of love: there are no distinctions within it.

    ( بيمار ) يشرب من شَجَاه طُويْقُ

    From Kandahar to al-Ruṣāfah, there is unity;

    Bīmār—Ṭuwayq drinks from its sorrow.

Indeed, I glimpse slumber in your right hand,

And the palm is death, and the sword keen-edged.

No one has betrayed this hand but a schemer,

And guile encircles the fearful heart.

O our blessed dawn, your light is coming,

No matter how much glitter nests in the eyes.

And the horizon in your eyes, O my beloved,

Is lush with grass, tender-skinned, leafy.

Ninety centuries, and the wounds persist,

And the face grows dewy, and the tongue is free.

    زند العظيمةِ بالعظام خليقُ

    Your forearm has not wearied, O princess of my letters;

The great woman's forearm is fit for great things.

And you set out, the surging sea slapping you with its palm,

And a gale and a strait hinder your passage.

And you arrived; fulfilling your purpose was a marvel,

And for whoever has survived, there is a path above the swords!
