A traveler, I follow two eyes that captivate me.
A traveler, I follow two eyes that preoccupy me
For her I sing, and from her my body drinks its fill.
For them I sing, and through them my body is satiated

When the waist of night girds itself with its darkness,
When the night tightens its dark waistbelt
She comes with her drowsy melodies, whispering to me.
The beautiful one comes with her melodies that distract me

فيin الهمِّsorrow لاno حدَّboundary بينbetween الشامal-Sham (the Levant) واليمنand Yemen
The vast expanse narrows around me, folding into my hand.
The vast expanse becomes too narrow for me, withdrawn into my hands
In sorrow, there is no boundary between al-Sham and Yemen.
In worries, with no limit between the Levant and Yemen

I wear a turban of pure confession;
A turban of the purity of confession I wear
A sheer robe of sorrow's infusion wears me.
A mantle of the essence of sorrow clothes me

I stretch over the desert wastes, verdure and flame—
I stretch over the horizons, green flames
Two opposites—what is this heart's sin, O my homeland?
Two opposites, what is the sin of this heart, O my homeland?
أناI أبوحُI pour out my heart وأنتِand you أحرفيmy letters ودميand my blood

I pour out my heart, and you are my letters and my blood;
I confide and you are my letters and my blood
And you are all that my time brings.
And you are all that my time brings

You pour into my heart, so I churn it;
You pour into my heart so I give birth
And it is not my fault if my milk curdles on me.
And it’s not my sin if milk has gone scarce for my son

You and I were created thus, frail;
You and I were created thus, and here
I drank tragedies from you, so drink my frailty.
I drank tragedies from you, so drink and be content

How I had hoped to come to you, turbaned with
How much I hoped to come to you triumphant
My sword, while they drove a thousand captives ahead of me,
My sword preceding me by a thousand pledges

كأننيas though I were فيin الهوىlove"سيفُSayf بنson of ذيDhi (possessor of) يزنYazan"
Urging on a sleek, swift steed and a song,
I nourish and groom a wild pony and a song
As though, in love, I were Sayf ibn Dhi Yazan.
As if I were in love “Sword of the son of Yazan”

But I came with head bowed, and my mount
But I came dejected, my she-camel limping
Was lame; I approached weeping, wearing my shroud.
I arrived weeping, wearing my shroud

So do not deepen my wounds, and understand my language;
So do not increase my wounds, understand my language
And do not sell, as they sold, for nothing.
And do not sell as they sold without price

فأنبلfor the noblest النَّاسof people منwhoever يُطوىis enfolded علىupon حسنgoodness
Look closely into my eyes, and read my weariness;
Seek in my eyes and read my fatigue
For the noblest of people is one enfolded in goodness.
For the most noble people are those who fold over good

Bring me an unfeeling heart, one not kept awake by
Give me a jaded heart that is not disturbed
The cares of humankind, and take poetry without sorrow.
By the worries of existence, and take poetry without longing
