عبدٌ قديم لمولى

عبدٌ قديم لمولى

Were it not, and were it not, and were it not—

Had it not been for an old servant of the Master

an age-old servant of a Master—

The secret would have become public

لأصبح السر جهرا

لأصبح السر جهرا

منى وأصبحت قولا

منى وأصبحت قولا

the secret would have become an open proclamation

And I would have become just words

from me, and I would have become speech;

And been absent from everything

وغبت عن كل شيء

وغبت عن كل شيء

مما بدا وتجلّى

مما بدا وتجلّى

and I would have vanished from everything

That appeared and manifested

that appeared and revealed itself.

Had it not been for the care of the All-Merciful's eye when He manifested

لولا عناية عين الر

لولا عناية عين الر

حمن حين تجلّى

حمن حين تجلّى

Were it not for the care of the eye of the All-

Had it not been for, had it not been for, had it not been for

Merciful, when He revealed Himself.

The generosity that did not abandon me

لولا ولولا ولولا

لولا ولولا ولولا

كرامة ما تخلّى

كرامة ما تخلّى

Were it not, and were it not, and were it not—

Glory be to Him, the Most High

a grace: He has not forsaken me.

My Master, as long as I am your servant

سبحانه وتعالى

سبحانه وتعالى

مولاي ما دمت مولى

مولاي ما دمت مولى

Glory be to Him, and exalted is He.

For He knows

My Master, so long as You remain Master,

That I humbled myself completely

فإنه هو يدري

فإنه هو يدري

أنى تفانيت ذلّا

أنى تفانيت ذلّا

for He Himself knows

And He, as my Lord

that I have effaced myself in abasement,

Humility towards His servant is more appropriate

وأنه وهو ربي

وأنه وهو ربي

بعبده الذل أولى

بعبده الذل أولى

and that He, who is my Lord,

And that I, and He is my Lord

has the greater claim to His lowly servant;

Am only a poor one, nothing but

وأنني وهو ربي

وأنني وهو ربي

مسكينه ليس إلا

مسكينه ليس إلا

and that I, He being my Lord,

And I am for Him, so be for me

am His poor one, nothing more.

O Lord, in word and deed

وإنّنيه فكن لي

وإنّنيه فكن لي

يا رب قولا وفعلا

يا رب قولا وفعلا

And indeed I am that one—so be for me,

My Master, as long as I am deserving

O Lord, in word and deed.

So I will meet You as deserving

مولاي ما دمت أهلا

مولاي ما دمت أهلا

فسوف ألقاك أهلا

فسوف ألقاك أهلا

My Master, so long as You are worthy,

And I do not know a master

then I shall find You worthy.

Other than Yourself as deserving

ولست أعرف مولا

ولست أعرف مولا

ي غير ذاتك أهلا

ي غير ذاتك أهلا

And I know no one, my Master,

Nor virtue for other than You

but Your very Self as worthy.

And how can one possess virtue

ولا لغيرك فضل

ولا لغيرك فضل

وكيف يملك فضلا

وكيف يملك فضلا

And none other than You has bounty;

Except through Your grace, my Lord

and how could another possess bounty

My Lord, Most High and Majestic

إلا بفضلك ربي

إلا بفضلك ربي

ربي تعالى وجلّا

ربي تعالى وجلّا

except through Your bounty, my Lord?

He is the Hopeful, the Generous

My Lord is exalted and majestic.

For what is subtle and majestic

هو الكريم المرجى

هو الكريم المرجى

لماه دقّ وجلّا

لماه دقّ وجلّا

He is the Generous One in whom hope is placed

At every instant and moment

for all things, small and great,

As long as I possess words

في كل حين وآن

في كل حين وآن

ما دمت أملك قولا

ما دمت أملك قولا

at every time and moment,

And intimacy and passion alternate after separation

as long as I possess speech.

My Master, after me

ولى بنجواه وجد

ولى بنجواه وجد

والهجر يعقب وصلا

والهجر يعقب وصلا

And in His whispered communion I have ecstasy;

There was nothing but imprint and murder

and estrangement is followed by union.

And my heart has been stripped

مولاي ما كان بعدى

مولاي ما كان بعدى

إلا انطباعا وقتلا

إلا انطباعا وقتلا

My Master, my distance was nothing

Of everything other than complete devotion

but an impression and a killing.

So be for Your servant, my Lord

وقد تجرد قلبي

وقد تجرد قلبي

من كل غير تخلّى

من كل غير تخلّى

And my heart has stripped itself bare

As long as he is deserving of grace

of all else, letting go.

And grant me success, greet and pray peace

فكن لعبدك ربي

فكن لعبدك ربي

ما دام للفضل أهلا

ما دام للفضل أهلا

So stand by Your servant, my Lord,

My Master, purify and bless

as long as he is worthy of grace.

وامنُن وصلّ وسلم

وامنُن وصلّ وسلم

مولاي زكّى وصلّى

مولاي زكّى وصلّى

And bestow favor, send blessings, and grant peace;

my Master has purified and blessed.
