سخرَmocked الموتُdeath منat نواياكyour intentions طرّاall together
I said: You whose worth has fallen among people,
Death ridiculed your intentions completely
death has mocked all your intentions.
This is your beloved mother who

تَتdied (completion) فشُقّىso cleave لهاfor her بصدركin your breast قبراa grave
This beloved mother of yours has
Died - so split your chest with a grave for her
died; cleave a grave for her in your breast.
So she awoke from the swoon of sin, moaning
فأفاقتthen she awoke منfrom غشيةthe swoon of الإثمsin هوناslowly
وعوَتand she howled صرخةًa cry تساقطُraining جمراembers
Then she slowly woke from sin's swoon
A scream that pours out embers
and howled a cry that rained embers.
And I accompanied the darkness, circling the night

لمnot تشاهدhad seen عيناهhis two eyes منfrom قبلُbefore فجراa dawn
So I walked with darkness, a phantom of the night,
Her eyes had never witnessed a dawn before
whose eyes had never before seen dawn.
And I stepped over the field of bodies

And I crossed the courtyard of bodies,
With eyes diminished and heart downcast
my eyes fixed, my heart subdued.
What sin did I commit, what sin

What sin had I committed, what sin,
When I left her without happiness?
when I left her without bringing happiness?
Do you see her say, when she lost me,

خدنَa companion of همٍّsorrow وُرودُهits roses منof قتادthorn shrubs
What do you think she says, now she has lost me,
Cheeks of worry whose roses are from kohl?
a companion of sorrow whose roses are thorn-bushes?
To her the distributor of fortunes, and to me

بعدafter حينٍa while ندامةthe remorse of الزهّادascetics
The divider of fortunes suffices her; enough for me,
After a time, the regret of ascetics
after a while, is the remorse of ascetics.

And the stillness of the dead came over me,
And the tears of sorrow inherited me
and tears of regret lamented me.

Do not blame one who lives in the shelter of
Of virtue - for the struggle of life has subjugated them

Perhaps a dignified man courts the soul of a prostitute

A lofty one may embrace a woman whorish in soul,
And the modesty of a maiden is on her face"
while her face bears a maiden's modesty.
