أعيشُI live أمor أدَعُI leave الأيّامَthe days للناسto the people
سئمتI grew weary of دنيايmy world منbecause of همّيmy worry ووسواسيand my obsessive doubts
Shall I live, or leave the days to others?
Shall I live or let the days be for others?
I am weary of my world because of my worry and obsessive doubts.
I'm tired of my world, my worries and obsessions.
إنif قلتُI said يوماًone day كفانيhas been enough for me ماwhat شقيتI suffered بهthrough it
أعودI return أُنعِشُI revive أحلاميmy dreams بإيناسيwith my reassurance
If one day I say, 'Enough of what has made me suffer,'
If I say one day enough of what I suffered,
I return to revive my dreams with my reassurance.
I go back to revive my dreams with my joy.
خلّدتI immortalized شعريmy poetry فيin نفسيmy soul وأحسَبُهand I think it
سينتهيwill end حينماwhen تنشقّsplit open أرماسيmy graves
I have immortalized my poetry in my soul, and I think it
I immortalized my poetry in myself and count it
Will end when my graves split open.
as ending when my life comes to its end.
بناتdaughters فكريmy thought كنوزٌtreasures لاno عدادcounting لهاfor them
فماso what لقَلبِيَwith my heart مكنوبٌstricken بإفلاسيby my bankruptcy
The daughters of my thought are treasures beyond counting.
The daughters of my thoughts are countless treasures
So why is my heart stricken by my bankruptcy?
So why is my heart burdened with bankruptcy?
إنif قالsays غيريَsomeone other than me حسبيenough for me المالthe wealth أجمَعهI gather it
أقولُI say حسبيَenough for me منfrom دنيايَmy world قرطاسيmy paper
If another says, 'The wealth I gather is enough for me,'
If another says my wealth that I gathered is enough,
I say, 'My paper is all I need from my world.'
I say my fill of life is just paper and pen.
وهبتُI gave فنِّيَmy art ماwhat أوتيتُI was given منfrom زمنيmy time
عمريmy life وفكريand my thought وآماليand my hopes وإحساسيand my feelings
I gave my art all that my time had given me:
I gave my art what I was given of my time,
My life, my thought, my hopes, and my feelings.
My life, my thoughts, my hopes and feelings.
وليand I have منfrom الفنّart أشواكٌthorns غنيتٌI was content بهاwith them
عنin place of كلّevery زهرflower ذكيِّstrong العطرِfragrance مياسswaying gracefully
And from art I have thorns that suffice me,
And from art I have thorns I sang with
In place of every flower, richly fragrant and swaying.
Above any bright scented flower.
وللمقاديرand fate has أحكامٌdecrees محيّرَةٌbewildering
منهاsome of them الرحيمُthe merciful ومنهاand some of them الجائرُthe unjust القاسيthe cruel
And fate has bewildering decrees:
Fate has confusing rules,
Some merciful, and some unjust and cruel.
Among them the merciful and the cruel tyrant.
إذاwhen تمنيتI wished for شيئاًsomething قالsaid ليto me زمنيmy time
ماnot أنتyou للنكباتof the calamities السودthe black بالناسيat all forgetful
When I wish for something, my time says to me:
If I wish for something my time tells me
'You are not one to forget the black calamities.'
You’re not suited for dark misfortunes.
وإنand if يئستُI despair فليthen I have فيin النارthe Fire منزلةٌa place
كأنَنيas though I قاتلa killer ألفاًa thousand منof الناسpeople
And if I despair, I have a place in the Fire,
And if I despair I have in the fire a place
As though I had killed a thousand people.
As if I killed thousands of people.
ربّاهُO my Lord إنif يكنis الآتيwhat is coming كسابقهlike what preceded it
فمُدَّthen stretch حبلَthe cord الردىof death منfrom حبلthe cord أنفاسيof my breaths
O my Lord, if what is coming is like what preceded it,
Oh Lord if what comes next is like what came before
Then stretch death's cord from the cord of my breaths.
Then extend the rope of ruin from my breath’s rope.
أفنيتُI spent عمريmy life فيamid الأرجاسِthe defilements أقربهاI approach them
فهلso do تزيدُincrease علىbeyond الأيّامthe days أرجاسيmy defilements
I have spent my life amid defilements, drawing near to them;
I spent my life on empty trills, the nearest
So do my defilements exceed the days?
So do the days add to my emptinesses?
