O mistress of poetry and dreams, what have they done

to you, those nights that vanished like my melodies?

    يهفو إليك ويشكو نار أحزاني

    This is my youth, whose joys have turned gray;

it yearns for you and laments the fire of my sorrows.

And the chaste heart journeys through life, blindly crossing

the wilderness of years amid barrenness and deprivation.

The tempests howl around me, and I take them,

in my hearing, for the wailing of ghosts and jinn.

And sorrowful tears in my eye are held back

by a remnant of pride whose wound is blood-red.

O mistress of poetry, I drink this poetry

from a spiritual spring in the heaven of love.

No worldly filth has tainted it, nor has anything disturbed

its purity but my moans and sorrows.

It is what made me happy in the springtime of love,

and it is what made me wretched in the autumn of love.

And you—you are the one who made me laugh through poetry,

and you—you are the one who made me weep through poetry.

You are the one who gave me a choice between its paradise

and its fires, so I chose my own fires.

O my bewilderment amid dreams you scatter

upon the palm of love, merciful yet cruel:

    between one thirsty, bewildered, love-distraught,

roaming the forest of night behind my eyelids,

and one weary of wandering, still

as your eyelids in the shade of peaceful slumber.

And patience is an epic whose beginnings are lost,

and the blazing embers of its ending have worn me out.

O mistress of poetry and dreams, what have they done

to you, those nights that vanished like my melodies?

The rising tide—the tide of hopes—has brought me near to you,

and the ebb—the ebb of my despair—has carried me far from you.
