1. الليل والسقم والقيود

    والأمل الضائع الشريد

    Night, sickness, and chains,

    And hope, lost and homeless,

  2. وثورة الوجد في كياني

    طليقة مالها حدود

    And passion's revolt within my being,

    Unfettered, with no bounds;

    سماءه السحب والرعود

    And the mind's bewilderment when they shroud

    Its sky—the clouds and thunder;

  4. ولوعة الحر حين يمسى

    وزاده النار والحديد

    And the free man's anguish when evening comes,

    And his sustenance is fire and iron;

  5. والموكب الضخم وهو يعدو

    وخلفه السائق المريد

    And the vast procession as it races,

    And behind it the wicked driver,

    تشوى بنيرانه الجلود

    He pours hell from his whip;

    Skins are roasted by its flames,

    يشبّ من تحته الوقود

    Upon a path of death,

    Fuel blazes from beneath it—

  8. رواية لونها طريف

    لكنّما ثوبها تليد

    A tale whose hue is novel,

    Yet its garment is age-old.

  9. يا دهر ما فيك من جديد

    فهل ترى ناظري جديد

    O Time, there is nothing new in you;

    So do you see my gaze as new?

  10. أسماءُ أحداثك الدواهي

    يضمّهنّ اسمك الوحيد

    The names of your calamitous events—

    Your sole name encompasses them.

    And the strangest thing about loving her

    Is that I am driven toward its love.

    So, O companions of the road, sing,

    For perhaps the distant will draw near.

    I shall sing and sing again,

    As long as a song resounds in my mind;

    ما دام لي في الثرى وجود

    And I shall yearn for dreams,

    As long as I exist upon the earth;

    And I shall long for my liberation,

    Even if chains humiliate me.

    So tell these nights

    That I am as unyielding as their events,

  19. وأنني رغم ما أُقاسي

    And that, despite what I endure

    Of the heat of their torments, I am happy.

  20. حسبي وحسب الحياة منى

    أنّي على ظلمها شهيد

    Enough for me—and enough for life from me—

    Is that I bear witness to her injustice.
