Keep me occupied with whatever you want from me,

And fill my hearing and my eye with passion,

With arts of seduction, with the flame

    Surging from your exquisite, resonant body;

Your wondrous body, in form and shadow,

    Beguiling, needing no other beauty.

Keep me occupied: you may gain from my life

A day we spend like dreamers,

In this corner, close to the

Earth—or else in the farthest corner.

It is a day like any day that will pass

Or has passed; life is one color like another.

We will spend it alone; then you will be pleased

And I will complain—or you will curse, and I will praise.

    Amid cheap wine and songs

    Vulgar, flowing to no tune,

    And perfumed smoke we inhale

Far away in our secluded den,

    And threadbare talk about nights

Of yours, and your little, aged heart,

And jokes you learned from Abu

Nuwas, or from Juha, the inventive sage,

You demand my life in payment for them,

And you say, "I have come away shortchanged."

It is a day like any day that will pass

Or has passed; life is one color like another.

We will spend it alone; then you will be pleased

And I will complain—or you will curse, and I will praise.

And in my eyes are longing and expectation,

And in your eyes is what arouses and wears me down.

Keep me occupied, and draw me near your

Vineyard, to gather its fruit and sing.

    Your coveted vineyard, close at

Hand, though it is the height of all desire,

Within it, from your crimson womanhood,

Lies hidden a world whose bounds exceed my imagining.

O daughter of night, of sin, of

    Horizons, prison, passion, and longing,

You are a tale the nights composed

From waywardness, bewilderment, and cruel caprice.

Set me ablaze: you will burn nothing of me except what

    Time has dried within me.

Then, of my passions, I will still retain

A treasure to enrich me in the seasons of love.

Set me ablaze, carouse, and let

Me taste what I have never tasted; be haughty and withhold.

And bewitch me into a shadow of your shadow in the

World, and leave me as you please.

    تجديني كما أنا فاطمئني

    Then return to me after a little while;

You will find me as I am, so rest assured.

Do not think I shall give you my

Days in their entirety; better not to think so.

You will gain from me only what the

Eye gains from the coal-blackness of murky darkness:

    Billows of shadow call

To you, and weep over you as they sing.

You will be a verse in my poetry,

Whose two sides the wind tears down and rebuilds.
