Is it on the summit, drunk on the wine of ages,

that you dwell, or in my thought and musings?

And in the tranquil oasis amid the wilderness of visions,

do you wander, or in my beating heart and eyes?

You circle about me as a strange spirit, its palm holding

the last remains of my blossoms' brittle wreckage.

And you glide through my fancy, a wandering phantom,

with which my lutes' melodies exchange whispered confidences.

And your voice across the horizons of my thought is like

the echo of a sigh slaughtered in throats.

When I wander along the shores, seeking solace

beside the waves, the waves return a scoffer's laugh.

And if the waves sing, I take their singing for

the moans of orphans or the sobbing of freeborn women.

And if their shells flash, their flashing is

the blaze of a red ember seething in my eye.

And if the breezes pass, fluttering, I take them,

in madness, for breaths within the bellies of furnaces.

And if a passing drowse sets my eyelids trembling,

you appear as a sleepless wound in my eye sockets.

And if the terrors of my misery lose sight of me,

you contrive that I should not awaken to my night companion.

And if hopes woo my heart, you appear

to it as a clumsy knife in a butcher's palm.

And if I say that life is a laughing man's song,

and set forth, singing joy onward toward the winepresses,

and fill my cup to the brim, my friends a bouquet

of flowers nourished by the palms of rain clouds,

and leave the world of people behind, my heart stirring

with longing for the world of dawning joy,

and the songs of the drunken melt within my hearing,

and spirits hover around the night gatherings,

and phantoms murmur, reciting to the worlds

the tale of nights and bygone centuries,

and my eye wheels—a bird whose nest is broken,

and whose unborn young the blaze of midday heat has burned,

and I drink with the horizon's star, while it is fettered,

a captive in fate's circling palms,

you knock upon the night, my wilderness,

and veil the star from me, though it is my night companion.

And you terrify my dreams and make me forget my tomorrow,

and go further, wrapping the darkness in my present.

And you cast the rumble of thunderclouds into my silence,

and melt a sorcerer's talisman into my eyelid.

So I bow my head, while the world turns upon a millstone

of thought and the worry abiding in my mind.

    تلقّنُه الأشاح همس الضمائر

    My companions question me, while my hearing is winged;

the [apparitions?] teach it the whispers of inner hearts.

And in my eye are a stranger's tears, and in my mouth

reproach for the heart of good fortune and misfortune.

And filling the hollows of my breast are a supplicant's sighs,

and filling my heart's core are a bewildered one's sighs.

As though you were a brooding stare in my eye, and in my blood

hurled stones, and in my hearing the moan of whirlwinds.

You have filled my whole existence, and I am one who

lives on dreams the life of a gambler.

So my wishes in love are not real,

    nor can I ever bear to leave my secret communing;

nor are you, O memory of the beloved, merciful

to a wounded heart venturing amid calamities.

As though you had been inspired to torment my repose,

and taught a love of oppression by the spirit of the one who forsook me.

With the beloved near, I thought you a fable,

which those felled by intoxicating passion concoct.

And in his absence—oh, the fire of his absence!—

I swallowed, O memory, the braziers' scalding water.

And nothing in the dreams of my life was a fable

except my hope for kindly destinies.

If only death's chanters would sing my procession onward

to my chilled grave among the tombs!

So what joy have I in life, when it is a poem

with ragged meters, not the work of a poet?

And he from whose life the oasis of hopes has withered

has no thought for the desert of life.
