I remembered you, and remembrance deepens my anguish.

So my heart sang the melodies of tears within its cave.

Two phantoms stir within it: one melts it

with longing, and another burns like the blaze of drought.

It is separation; the one who ordained love did not create it

for anything but the torment of the wasting, love-stricken lover.

When night calls me, I recall moments

we shared, with darkness like estrangement and breezes like reproach.

You embrace me like a child whose shyness clothes

him in sackcloth robes of safety and sweet hope.

So I perish as a buyer's amulet perishes,

which he offers to draw near to the Pole Star.

Deprivation of you returns to me, and I seek refuge

in your breast, O my world, from your painful abandonment.

And my tears are prisoners in my eyelids, bound

by a tyrant's pride that checks my flood of tears.

I display my happiness at our meeting, and my joy,

and fear a parting that will rob me of my reason.

I swim in my thoughts, while my tears swim too,

then a hand awakens me, like the clouds' morning rain.

We depart as we came, trailing our chastity,

teaching flowers and grass the purity of love.

I remembered you when the caravan's people called out to it,

and my tears upon your wrist shone brighter than the bracelet.

I kiss a sleeping dawn, its secret veiled,

and entrust to it the secret of yearning and love.

I fill the cup of longing to the brim, and longing prevails

over me; I weep for fear of my companions' reproach.

The hastening caravan called me, but I offered no more

than a sigh that rent the ribs within my side.

The hand of separation tears apart my beating heart's hopes,

and my eye laments them with its wet pearls.

I remembered you, and a sigh flowed forth with the night,

made tender by whispered prayer, that my Lord might have mercy on me.

The expanses of patience closed in on me, so I left them,

for illusions to fling me into their spacious breast.

And in my breast a devout monk went mad,

clamoring in complaint against distance and nearness.

For in distance is a fire whose embers melt the soul,

and in nearness, the scorching ground of slander and lies.

The diviner treats him with medicine and incantations,

yet what have hearts' wounds to do with medicine?

And he whose genius is spiritual in its passion—

how can a brother of dust ward harm away from him?

So, Lord, either grant relief from love

to my heart—for what I have tasted of it is enough, enough—

or a meeting whose serenity is not clouded

by the calamities of time, which has never slept in its war against me.

For I am only a poet whose heart has spurned

the adornments of his world and soared above the shooting stars.

And my love is a tragedy whose weeping shakes

the heart of unwrought iron and hard stone.

I sought the soul's serenity in the cup and in love,

but my cup brought me low, and my love made me a wanderer.
