Exalted are You; no master but You—You created me.

And I was nothing before my existence began.

And You let me witness what had been hidden from me,

and many an eyewitness is no true witness.

The signs of Your universe tell me that I

am ancient, so my being within it is not new.

So the meaning of my existence within the meanings of their existence

is like my song's meaning within my song's words.

And though my secret is, in truth, created,

my secret was in the worlds before I bore witness.

Exalted are You: You clothed meanings in outward forms

that point to a distant light there,

beyond the bounds of the unseen, whose outpourings flow

upon a beating heart in the breast, sorely weary.

Forms that appear to the eyes and vanish,

and their lofty secrets lie beyond my fetters,

veiled; but for You—Your radiance—I would not have known them,

and would have lived with a mind adrift in existence.

They whisper to souls the intimate secrets of their passion,

through the ordering of the One who originates life and restores it.

Exalted are You: You did not bring a single being into creation

without a wisdom that guides a discerning heart.

There is not an atom in the universe but has

a place for bowing or a place for prostration.

    فإليه مصير كلّ مصير

    And implore Him at every moment;

for to Him every destination leads.

    فتعرّض لها بقلب طهور

    At every moment our Lord sends breaths of grace;

so open yourself to them with a pure heart.

Do not allow desire a way to master you,

for desire is master of the wayward deceiver.

    وكل الأمر للعليم الخبير

    And erase despair with hope, and surrender;

and entrust the matter to the All-Knowing, the All-Aware.

Indeed, the worst of souls is a despairing soul,

ever resentful of what has been decreed.

Its state in life is like the state of Iblis:

despair of the Merciful, the Forgiving.

We bid farewell to those we bid farewell to, then go on

to what was jest, as though it were earnest.

As though those departing were children of extinction,

and we, after them, are children of eternity.

We say, 'When shall we repent?' while we disobey,

and ask Him for salvation without effort.

And we forget Him, yet He remembers us, so we transgress,

and strive in error without purpose.

And we hope He will be our supporter,

while we live in envy and malice.

Exalted is God! How could He be a helper

to one who persists in error, headstrong?

    of illusions, standing without pillars.

and if we wish, Bakr is unlike Zayd.

The creature cannot do without its Lord,

in its fleeting serenity and in its distress,

and in life's affluence or its ease,

and in the heart's remoteness or its nearness.

And how could it be otherwise? He is the Mighty, beside whom

    the creature has no authority.

Is there any manifest wealth except His bounty,

or any abiding love except His love?

I am standing at the door, so let me

holy, from the light of the eye of certainty.

    وإذا ما نسيتكم فاذكروني

    And whenever I remember You, hear me;

and whenever I forget You, remember me.

one day I sleep through remembrance of You, awaken me.

the Forgiver of sin, I shall erase my doubts.

crown me, and adorn me with acceptance.

    فالطفوا بي بفضلكم وارحموني

    For I am Your servant, and have none but You;

so be gentle with me through Your bounty, and have mercy on me.

    Rescue me before the world,

with its waves, sinks the ship of my faith.

Your way is mercy, bounty, and pardon,

while sins and ruinous deeds are my affairs.

And if one like me has no share

in Your sanctuary, how deep are my sorrows!
