Do not lament if memory stirs, for

Lamentation avails nothing, nor does weeping help.

وأرح من حبها قلبا سما

عن هوى الدنيا وزكّته السماء

عن هوى الدنيا وزكّته السماء

And free from love of her a heart that rose

Console the heart that loved her sublime,

Above worldly desire and was purified by heaven.

above this world's delights as heaven's domain.

إنها أنثى ظلوم كلما

زدت وجدا فاض من فيها الثناء

زدت وجدا فاض من فيها الثناء

She is a cruel woman; whenever

She's a cruel mistress, who ever more

Your longing grows, praise pours from her mouth.

grows cold when ardour would her favour obtain.

فانقع الغلة قد طال الظما

فانقع الغلة قد طال الظما

وأغاريدك من طين وماء

وأغاريدك من طين وماء

So quench the burning thirst; thirst has lasted long,

Prolonged suffering has brought distress so sore,

And your songs are of clay and water.

your songs but mud and water for all their strain.

وابي جرحك أن يلتئما

وابي جرحك أن يلتئما

وهي لا تسمع ألحان الدماء

وهي لا تسمع ألحان الدماء

And your wound has refused to heal,

Let your wound resist all healing's balm,

While she does not hear the melodies of blood.

for she heeds not the music of blood and pain.
