I am spent, and my weeping does me no good.

my soul disputes with me, and I retreat resigned—

and the patience of one who found no kindly soul among people.

And if the dreadful night closes its eyelids

over me, my sighs tumble upon my breast,

by the desert's burning noon, scorching the corners of the eyes.

no one on earth whose plight is like mine.

were nothingness; but when she is absent, you prolong your whispered communion.

yet love her as a sublime phantom of light.

and lit my dreams with the light of my imagination.

pity my groans, and bring my remains to life?

Illusions said to me: “Where is her faithfulness?”

I told my illusions: “And where is mine?

She has given me body, soul, and love,

and I gave her only the crumbs of my youth.

and I found myself entering the dwellings where she was.

With longing I kindled the spirit of my will,

and was made to forget all but my pleasure and delight.

My pleading voice tore through the stillness of the night,

and my overwhelming passion tore through the stillness of my soul.

She sprang up to match my cries, and I imagined her

struggling, like me, against dread and collapse.

I greeted her, but she fell mute; I questioned her,

and she was like the grave's silence, stirring turmoil.

Her eyes said: “I have given my affections

to someone else; pass the span of life alone.”

Oh, how many a night grew so long I thought it

    eternity—until dawn erased that thought.”

I cursed you, foolish woman! I had not been faithless,

nor had my heart been merely playing at love for you.

But it was my fate, my fortune, and my ordeal:

they divided my days among them and deepened my misery.

or my memories—ah, those memories of mine!

even if black nights shatter my endurance.

I have grown used to struggling with time since the day of my birth,

as though I faced my reckoning here on earth.

O solace from her memory, begone! I could never

forget the one who was the beacon of my life.

as tears for what I had endured, and as tragedies.

that longs for its return, anguished and athirst.

I tore my hopes apart, and they lay slaughtered,

their limbs scattered, passing through the nights.

I sealed my serenity in a flask of deep darkness,

and disowned even my smile and my frown.

Truths clouded before my eyes, and doubt unsheathed

against me a sword, thirsty-edged and keen.

and spare myself, or put my life to death?

My life is a road whose end I do not know,

and from my very beginning I had not known its start.

My death is a wilderness over which the unseen plays

the flutes of ghosts that shake the deep darkness.

    أكرّشها إمّا استجابت ندائيا

    What have I to do with the world? I am tired of its call;

I drive it away if it answers my call.

Leave me to the most enduring of immortals, to embrace me,

so I may leave you with nothing owed by me or to me.
