    This terrifying, exhausting, cruel siege—

How long will it strike my two sides like an axe?!

This siege, which is still being imposed

Around me by the slaves, with delusions and ropes.

Had it encircled the solid mountains, it would have split

Their rocks, and the towering, firmly rooted peak would have fallen.

Had it encircled the lions of the forest, they would have trembled,

And, after their pride, yielded in utter submission.

    يُرِيدُ تَصْفِيَتِي، أَوْ كَتْمَ أَنْفَاسِي

    This siege is a wicked, ferocious siege;

It seeks to eliminate me, or stifle my breath.

I see it with certainty, wherever they wander—

My thoughts, across horizons and peoples.

As though I were a lost man in a forest, coveted

    By beasts—beasts without feeling.

So nothing tears apart their plots around me

Except the patience and sparks of light within me.

So they return disgraced, with no share

Of what they seek from me, save bankruptcy.

    وَلَسْتُ لِلْقَهْرِ وَالأَغْلاَلِ بِالنَّاسِي

    Betrayal, poverty, and forced displacement—I know them;

Nor am I one to forget oppression and shackles.

And family, tomorrow, and children—surely they have

A Lord who comforts, whether the healer refuses or helps.

I do indeed laugh at my death and watch for it

Without dread, and live like a beacon.

I renounced the earth; this renunciation terrified them,

And left them between a whispering tempter and a slinking one.

It pulled every thread from their fingers,

So the people strike fives against sixes in bewilderment.

I do not boast of my steadfastness; I am a man

Whose nearness to God has freed me from dependence on people.
