I have grown ashamed at how long I have pledged myself to my Lord,

To piety, yet have never renewed my repentance.

I pledge myself to Him by night, then relapse by noon,

And by night I ask Him to forgive my sin.

I am ashamed—how long shall I remain while transgressions

Are like the waves of the sea in their thrust and pull?

No season of goodness has ever passed

Without marveling utterly at my condition!

Whenever Ramadan arrives, I say: This

Is surely a season of repentance, guidance, and nearness.

I resolve that light shall be my spirit,

And hope that purity shall be my garment.

And at ʿArafat, year after year,

I repent at dawn, whether silent or chanting “Labbayk.”

Then afterward I return the way I came,

To my errors, my lapses, and my anguish.

So were all those seasons barren, then,

And did they fail to make my barrenness fruitful?!

  10. • • •

    • • •

    • • •

    • • •

Behold, I know full well that my day,

Like my yesterday, was lost in play and fear,

And in the longings of a soul never fulfilled,

Scattered by the winds in every direction,

And in sweet hopes that have come crashing down,

As cherished wishes fall within an ardent lover’s breast.

Yet I console myself with this: that I

Hew my path through solid, deaf rocks,

Grow weary of the lesser sins among my sins,

And shun the major ones, though they take captive.

I move steadfastly toward my Lord,

And lovingly offer Him the molten essence of my heart.
