ظللنا فبِتنا عند أم محمد

ظللنا فبِتنا عند أم محمد

بيوم ولم نشرب شراباً ولا خمرا

بيوم ولم نشرب شراباً ولا خمرا

We spent the day, then the night, at Umm Muhammad's,

We tarried at Umm Muhammad's abode

We spent the day and passed the night at the abode of Umm Muhammad,

on a day when we drank neither any drink nor wine.

A day without drinking wine or liquor

On a day wherein we consumed neither drink nor wine;

إذا صمَتَت عنّا ضجرنا لصمتها

إذا صمَتَت عنّا ضجرنا لصمتها

وإن نطَقَت هاجت لألبابنا سكرا

وإن نطَقَت هاجت لألبابنا سكرا

Whenever she said nothing to us, we grew restless at her silence;

When she was silent, we were vexed by her silence

If she fell silent before us, we grew restless at her silence,

and if she spoke, she stirred intoxication in our minds.

And if she spoke, her words intoxicated our minds

And if she spoke, she stirred a drunkenness within our minds.
