أَتَتنيshe came to me تُؤَنِّبُنيreproaching me فيfor البُكاءِweeping
فاهِلاًso welcome بِهاto her وَبَتَأنيبِهاand to her reproach
She came to me, reproaching me for weeping.
She came to me, reproaching me for weeping
She came to me, reproaching me for my weeping,
So welcome to her and to her reproach!
Heedless of her and her reproach was I
So welcome to her, and to her reproach!
تَقولُshe says وَفيand in قَولِهاher words حِشمَةٌmodesty
أَتَبكيdo you weep? بِعَينٍwith an eye تَرانيyou see me بِهاthrough it
She says, with modesty in her words,
She said, and in her saying was modesty
She says, and in her words lies modesty:
"Do you weep with an eye through which you see me?"
Do you weep with eyes that see me therewith?
"Do you weep with the eye that beholds me?"
فَقُلتُso I said إِذاif اِستَحسَنَتit finds beautiful غَيرَكُمanyone but you
أَمَرتُI ordered الدُموعَthe tears بِتَأديبِهاto chastise it
So I said, "If it finds anyone but you beautiful,
I said: when others please you
I replied, "If it ever admired other than you,
I shall order the tears to chastise it."
I order tears for their chastising
I ordered the tears to discipline it."
