أَنَّthat خَيرَthe best of الوُدِّaffection ماthat which نَفَعاbenefits
Convey to the young men a message:
Tell the youths in full
Convey to the young men a message:
that the best affection is that which benefits.
That the best affection is that which benefits
That the best of friendship is that which truly avails.
إِنَّindeed قَرماًa noble chief مِنfrom بَنيthe sons of مَطَرٍMatar
أَتلَفَتused up كَفّاهُhis two hands ماwhat جَمَعاthey both gathered
Indeed, a noble chief of Banu Matar—
Verily an old man of the Bani Matar
Indeed, a noble chief of the Banu Matar—
his two hands have spent what they gathered.
His gathered hands destroyed what they amassed
His hands have scattered all that he amassed.
كُلَّماwhenever عُدناwe returned لِنائلِهِfor his bounty
عادَhe became again فيin مَعروفِهِhis generosity جَذَعاyoung and vigorous
Whenever we returned for his bounty,
Whenever we returned to gain him over
Whenever we returned to seek his bounty,
he grew young again in his generosity.
He turned away in his kindness completely stiff
He returned to his kindness with renewed zeal.
