زَعمتyou claimed بِأَنكthat you ياO مُلحدُheretic
تَعيشyou live مَدىfor the span of الدَهرall time لاnot تُلحَدُyou are buried
You claimed that you, O heretic,
You claimed, O atheist, that you would live forever unburied.
Would live for all time, never to be buried.
But the cup of misery turned against you, and death overtook you, O impudent one.
فَدارَتthen came round عَلَيكَto you كُؤسcups الرَدىdeath
وَأَدرككand overtook you المَوتdeath ياO هُدهدHudhud
Then the cups of death came round to you,
Your life was long and fruitless, and you departed as if you had never existed.
And death overtook you, O Hudhud.
And Iblis wept over you, and Fadfad was straitened by grief for you.
وَعمرُكand your life طالَgrew long بِلاwithout طائلٍbenefit
وَرُحتand you departed كَأَنكas though you لاnot تُوجدyou exist
And your life stretched on to no avail,
So taste in the blazing Hell the drink of scalding water, a recompense for what your hands put forward.
And you departed as though you had not existed.
How many idols did you prostrate to, yet would not prostrate to your Lord?
وَإِبليسand Iblis لَماwhen هَلكتyou perished بَكىwept
عَلَيكَfor you وَضاقَand grew narrow بِهِfor him الفدفدthe vast plain
And Iblis, when you perished, wept
How often did you arrogantly boast, O son of fornication, of doing despicable acts that earn no praise?
For you, and the vast plain grew too narrow for him.
The steeds of your misguidance did not stop galloping in their bewilderment, with no guide to restrain them.
فَذُقso taste فيin جَحيمHell شَرابthe drink الحَميمscalding water
جَزاءrecompense بِماfor what قَدّمتهsent it ahead اليَدthe hand
So taste in Hell the drink of scalding water,
Old age did not keep you from the private abode where you used to sit.
In recompense for what your hand sent ahead.
So you obeyed desire, old man of evil, and the leprous outcast disobeyed you.
فَكَمfor many a صَنَمidol جئتَهyou came to it ساجِداًprostrating
وَكُنتand you used to لَربكto your Lord لاnot تَسجُدyou prostrate
For you approached many an idol in prostration,
You rejected religious duties and denied them, and contradicted what Ahmad established.
Yet you would not prostrate to your Lord.
Were not the people of Lot and those who passed before a lesson to you, O corrupter?
وَكَمand how often قَدindeed تَفاخَرتyou boasted ياO اِبنson الزِناfornication
بِفعلof committing الخنىlewdness وَهُوَand it لاnot يُحمَدis praised
And how often you boasted, O son of fornication,
Did not the people of ‘Aad perish when Allah decreed for them, and they were not immortal?
Of committing lewdness, though it merits no praise.
And I knew well of their condition, for you are one of them, as you stipulated.
وَخَيلand the steeds ضلالكyour error ماnot عاقَهاrestrained them
عَنfrom الرَكضgalloping فيin غَيِهاtheir waywardness مُرشدa guide
And the steeds of your error were not held back
So Allah gave you respite after them, hoping that you would be guided by what befell them.
From galloping in their waywardness by any guide.
But you only increased in misguidance, so you met what you used to deny out of heedlessness.
وَلَمand not يَنهكdeter you الشَيبgray hair عَنfrom مقعدa seat
بِهِat it كُنتyou used to فيin خلوةseclusion تقعدyou sit
Nor did gray hair deter you from a seat
And here you are in a pit of fire, ever more intensely blazing and unextinguished.
Where you used to sit in seclusion.
After reckoning, your destination is to Malik, O most wretched one.
فَياso O شَيخold man سُوءevil أَطَعتyou obeyed الهَوىdesire
وَلَمand not يَعصكdisobey you الأَبرَصthe leprous one الأَمرَدthe beardless one
So, O wicked old man, you obeyed desire,
There you will be roasted in Hellfire, and not allowed to sit beside Imru’ al-Qays.
And the leprous, beardless one did not disobey you.
Can the hypocrite have anything but harm from this elegy that is recited?
جحدتyou denied الفُروضthe prescribed duties وَأَنكَرتَهاand you rejected them
وَخالَفتand you defied ماwhat سنهhe instituted it أَحمَدAhmad
You denied the prescribed duties and rejected them,
So whoever blames me for it is one who will sit with him in the intense flames.
And defied what Ahmad had instituted.
A believer has no duty to support one who does not worship Allah.
أَماnot? كانَthere was فيin قَومthe people of لَوطLot وَمنand those who
مَضىpassed away عبرةٌa lesson لَكَfor you ياO مُفسدcorrupter
Was there not, in Lot's people and those
Moreover, what I have said is nothing but what you all bear witness to.
Who passed away, a lesson for you, O corrupter?
It suffices me to have depicted him, defiant in Hell, blazing and charred.
أَماnot? هَلكتperished قَومthe people of عادَ‘Ad وَقَدand indeed
قَضىpassed judgment اللَهGod فيهُمupon them وَماand not خُلِّدواthey were made immortal
Did not the people of ‘Ad perish, when
God passed judgment upon them, and they were not made immortal?
وَقَدand indeed كُنتyou were أَدرىbetter informed بِأَحوالهمabout their circumstances
لِأَنكbecause you مِنهُمone of them كَماas تَعهدyou know
And you knew their circumstances better,
Because you are one of them, as you know.
فَأَمهلكso gave you respite اللَهGod مِنfrom بَعدِهمafter them
عَساكَperhaps you might بِماthrough what نالَهُمbefell them ترشدfind guidance
So God gave you respite after them,
In hopes you might find guidance through what befell them.
فَزدتso you increased ضَلالاًin error فَلاقيتso you encountered ماwhat
لَهُconcerning it كُنتyou used to مِنout of غَفلةheedlessness تَجحدyou deny
But you grew more astray, and encountered what
You had denied out of heedlessness.
وَهاand behold أَنتyou فيin حُفرةa pit نارُهاits fire
تَزيدincreases اِشتِعالاًin blazing وَلاand not تَخمدdies out
And here you are in a pit whose fire
Burns ever more fiercely and does not die out.
وَبَعدand after الحِسابthe reckoning إِلىto مالكMalik
مَصيركyour destination ياO أَيُّهاyou الأَنكَدthe most wretched
And after the reckoning, to Malik
You are bound, O most wretched one.
هُنالكthere تَصلىyou will burn سَعيراًa blazing fire وَعَنand from
جِوارthe company of امرئImru’ القَيسal-Qays لاnot تطردyou are driven away
There you will burn in a blazing fire, and from
Imru’ al-Qays's company you will not be driven away.
وَهَلand is there لِلمنافقfor the hypocrite غَيرanything but الأَذىhurt
بِهَذاin this الرِثاءthe elegy الَّذيwhich يُنشدis recited
And is there anything but hurt for the hypocrite
In this elegy that is recited?
فَمنso whoever لامَنيblames me فيهِfor it فَهوَthen he الَّذيwho
لَهُfor him مَعَهُwith him فيin اللَظىthe blazing fire مقعدa seat
So whoever blames me for it is the one
Who has a seat with him in the blazing fire.
وَلَيسَand there is no عَلىincumbent on مُؤمنa believer نصرةsupport
لِمَنfor one who كانَwas لِلّهto God لاnot يَعبدworships
And no believer is obliged to give support
To one who did not worship God.
عَلىdespite أَنَthe fact that ماwhat قُلتُهI said it لَمnot يَكُنwas

Yet what I said was not
Other than what all of you attest to.
وَحَسبيand enough for me أَنيthat I أَرختهI recorded his date
مُخالفa dissenter فيin سَقرSaqar يَكمدlanguishes in grief
And it suffices me that I recorded his date:
A dissenter languishes in Saqar.
