ماwhat حيلَتيmy recourse غَيَّرَchanged الهجرانُabandonment أَلوانيmy colors
وَالبينand separation بَعدafter لَذيذsweet الوَصلunion أَلوانيwore me down
What recourse have I? Abandonment has changed my complexion.
My condition has changed its colors since we parted,
And separation, after sweet union, has worn me down.
And separation after the sweet union has changed my colors.
وَعاذِليand my reproacher عاذريexcuses me فيمنconcerning the one who رمىshot كبديmy liver
عَنfrom قوسthe bow حاجبهof his eyebrow ظُلماًunjustly فَأَصمانيand struck me dead
And my reproacher excuses me over the one who shot my liver
My blamer blames me for one who shot my liver,
from the bow of his eyebrow, unjustly, and struck me dead.
Unjustly, from the bow of his eyebrow and made me deaf.
وَكانand he had أَقسمsworn لَمّاwhen أَنthat صَبَوتI fell in love لَهُwith him
أَنthat لاnot يَخونhe would betray فَماyet not أَوفىhe kept faith بِأيمانwith oaths
And he had sworn, when I fell in love with him,
He had sworn, when I was devoted to him,
not to betray me; yet he kept none of his oaths.
That he would not betray, but he did not keep his oath.
وَكانَand it was عَهديmy expectation بِهِof him أَنthat لاnot يُقاطعنيhe would cut me off
مِنfrom حَيثthe fact that فيin حُبِّهlove of him قاطَعتI cut off خلانيmy friends
And I had expected him not to cut me off,
My pact with him was that he would not boycott me
since, for love of him, I had cut off my friends.
From where, in his love, he had severed my companions.
فَخابَso proved false ظَنيmy expectation وَعُمريand my life ضاعَwas wasted أَكثَرُهmost of it
ماwhat is بَينbetween صدٍّrejection وتَعنيفٍand harsh rebuke وهجرانand abandonment
So my hopes proved false, and most of my life was wasted
So my assumption was wrong and most of my life was wasted
amid rejection, harsh rebukes, and abandonment.
Between rejection, rebuke, and estrangement.
هَذاthis وَإِنيَand indeed I لَمdid not أَشكوcomplain إِلىto أَحَدٍanyone
كربيmy anguish وَسُهديand my sleeplessness وَآلاميand my pains وَأَشجانيand my sorrows
All this, though I have complained to no one
And I have not complained to anyone
of my anguish, sleeplessness, pains, and sorrows.
Of my anguish, sleeplessness, pain, and sorrows.
وَكلَّماand whenever رمتُI sought أَسلوto forget لاnot يُطاوعنيit obeys me
قَلبٌa heart نَماgrew وَجدُهits passion فيهِwithin it وَأَعيانيand exhausted me
And whenever I seek to forget, it refuses to obey me—
Whenever I try to comfort myself, my obstinate heart disobeys me,
a heart whose passion has grown within it and exhausted me.
A heart that found solace in it and my eyes.
ياO قَلبheart حتامَuntil when ترضيهyou please him وَتغضبنيand anger me
مِنfrom بعدafter ماthat مالَhe inclined للأعداtoward the enemies وَعادانيand became my enemy
O heart, how long will you please him and anger me,
O heart, how long will you appease him and anger me,
after he sided with my enemies and became my foe?
After he has inclined to the enemy and become hostile to me?
وَكَيفَand how تشركyou commit idolatry فيin دينthe faith الهَوىof love سَفهاًfoolishly
وَالشركand idolatry لَيسَis not سِوىother than كفرunbelief وَكفرانand ingratitude
And how can you foolishly commit idolatry in the faith of love,
How foolishly do you associate others in the religion of love,
when idolatry is nothing but unbelief and ingratitude?
When polytheism is nothing but blasphemy and blasphemy?
أَمor كَيفَhow تَرغبyou desire فيin رِجسa filthy one وَمبتذلand a debased one
وَإِنand even if يَكُنbe أَصلُهhis origin مِنfrom دارthe abode رضوانRidwan
Or how can you desire someone filthy and debased,
Or how can you desire the vile and the degraded,
even if his origin is in the abode of Ridwan?
Even if its origin is from the Abode of Peace?
أَماis it not كَفىenough أَنهُthat he ماnot ودّهloved him أَحدٌanyone

Is it not enough that no one has loved him
Is it not enough that no one loved him
except someone abject, contemptible, depraved, and hateful?
Except the despicable, disgraced, and immoral?
أَماdo you not تَرىsee كَيفَhow كانَتwas أَمسَyesterday وَقعتُهhis encounter
مَعwith البَليدthe dullard الذَميمthe loathsome الخائنthe treacherous الجانيthe wrongdoer
Do you not see how his encounter went yesterday
Do you not see how yesterday I was deceived,
with the dull-witted, loathsome, treacherous wrongdoer?
By the insensitive betrayer and treacherous villain?
وَافاهhe visited him شَهراًfor a month فَلَمّاthen when قلَّdwindled درهمُهhis dirham
جَفاهhe shunned him جَفوةthe coldness غَدّارٍof a treacherous man وَخوّانand a habitual betrayer
He visited him for a month; then, when his dirhams ran low,
He kept him for a month, but when his money was scarce,
he shunned him with the coldness of the treacherous and faithless.
He shunned him with the betrayal of a traitor and deceiver.
فَجاءَthen came يَسعىhurrying بَليدُthe fool السوءof evil عاقبهhe punished him
عَلىfor خِيانةbetraying مَعروفٍkindness وَإِحسانand generosity
Then the evil fool came running and punished him
So the despicable traitor got his just desserts
for betraying kindness and generosity.
For the betrayal of kindness and favor.
لَكنهمbut they عَزَلوهthey dismissed him مِنbecause of سَفاهتهhis foolishness
عَنfrom منصبa post بَينَamong أَقرانpeers وَأَخدانand intimates
But they dismissed him for his foolishness
But they dismissed him from his position for his stupidity,
from a post among peers and intimates.
Among colleagues and brethren.
أَماas for المنافقthe hypocrite مذمومblameworthy فَماso not ربحتprofited
مَعهُwith him تجارتهhis trade مِنfrom بَعدafter خسرانloss
As for the blameworthy hypocrite, his trade brought no profit
As for the hypocrite, condemned, I gained nothing
with him after loss.
From his business after the loss.
فَإنَّهمfor indeed they عَزَلوهthey dismissed him حَيثbecause شاركهhe joined him
فيin الإثمsin وَاللَهand God يجزيrequites كُلَّevery إِنسانperson
For they dismissed him because he joined him
For they dismissed him when he partook
in sin; and God requites every person.
In sin, and Allah repays every man.
وَسَوفَand will يَلقىreceive قَرينthe companion السوءof evil صفقتَهhis slap
فيon يَومa day نَحسof ill fortune وَتنكيلand exemplary punishment وَأَحزانand sorrows
And the evil companion will receive his slap
And he will meet his wicked friend's punishment
on a day of ill fortune, chastisement, and sorrows.
On an inauspicious day of suffering and sorrows.
يَومٍa day يَعضhe bites عَلىon الكَفينboth palms مِنout of نَدَمٍremorse

A day when he bites both palms out of remorse,
A day he will bite his hands in regret
and on it reaches evening abject among his brethren.
And become disgraced among brethren.
لَوif أَنَّهُمthat they سمعواthey heeded نصحيmy counsel لَماwould not خسرواthey lost

لَماwhen أَتيتI brought لَهُمto them فيهِconcerning it بِسُلطانwith compelling proof
Had they heeded my counsel, they would not have lost
If only they had heeded my advice, they would not have lost.
when I brought them compelling proof concerning it.
I did not come to them with proof.
لَكنهمbut they جَهلواthey acted ignorantly وَالجَهلُand ignorance غايتهits end
فيin هذهِthis life الخزيdisgrace بَينَamong الإنسhumans وَالجانand jinn
But they acted ignorantly, and ignorance's end
But they were ignorant, and the utmost ignorance
in this life is disgrace among humans and jinn.
Is this disgrace among mankind and jinn.
وَفيand at القِيامةthe Resurrection لاnot تجزىis requited نَميمتهمtheir tale-bearing
إِلاexcept بزجرwith rebuke وَرَدعand restraint ثُمَّthen نيرانfires
And at the Resurrection their tale-bearing is requited
On Judgement Day, their gossip will be rewarded
only with rebuke and restraint, then fires.
Only with rebuke, deterrence, then fire.
أَماas for الدنيّthe base man فتكفيهِso it suffices him مذلَّتُهhis humiliation

As for the base man, his humiliation suffices him,
As for the lowly, his humiliation here suffices,
and the slaps in this life among his peers.
And the slap among peers.

And a monstrosity has been clad in garments of disgrace.
And the hideous attire of disgrace has clothed
We seek refuge in God from disgrace and abandonment.
May Allah protect us from disgrace and abandonment.

And after his death, bitter cold awaits him;
And the snarling of hellfire is his lot after death,
he spends evening and morning bound to a devil.
Accompanying him morning and eve with a devil.
