Union with the full moon's brother is all I seek.

Though he has gone far from me, taking my hopes with him.

For my heart has nothing to distract it from him,

And the arrows of reproach find no target within it.

How could it be otherwise, when my limbs are enraptured with him?

For every limb bears the strike of arrows from him.

Yes, I seek no aim but my love for him,

Though the world is bent on reproaching me for him.

Yet reproaching me for love is of no use,

If I am blessed in keeping a pledge.

    فَذَلِكَ بُهتانٌ وَزور كَلام

    So do not heed the slanderer or his gilded words;

For that is calumny and lying talk.

Do you not know that for your sake I have forsaken my neighbors,

And my family, my friends, and my sweet sleep?

I have no fault in love that warrants my anguish,

And my abandonment, my torment, and my lingering sickness.

O my master, this separation has harmed me,

And weakened my body's strength, and crushed my bones.

Yet, because of fierce longing and heartache, it could not

Affect my passion or my overwhelming love.

And oh, how many nights passed in our companionship,

To the dance of lutes and Zunam's flute.

Nights that appeared as a white blaze on Time's brow,

As the finest leader shone among mankind:

Ra'fat, namesake of God's Friend, the one

Through whom glory rose to the noblest station.

A prince whose star shone among the stars,

So even the willfully blind onlooker was astounded by it.

And a brimming ocean encompassing all knowledge,

And a scholar guarding the field of eloquence.

And the finest champion of the sciences, guiding them

With thought like an unerring arrow and a keen sword.

And a fierce lion: if his understanding's army strikes

At ignorance, it leaves it in death's fetters.

And a noble man who has become, to glory, virtue, and bounty,

An ally, fortune's companion, a scion of noble men.

    فَمولاي عَنهم بِالفضائل سامي

    So, by God, leave Quss, Ma'n, and Hatim aside;

For my lord surpasses them in virtues.

And do not mention al-Kindi, for, however high he rose,

Beside that exalted lord, he is like a boy.

And Euclid, were he compared in any respect

With him, would be as a mere drop from a cloud.

May God preserve days lit by his face,

And an age that became, through him, love's captive.

And he revived sciences that have never ceased, in glory's heaven,

To rise through his resolve in beautiful order.

And it is enough for me that offices are ennobled by him,

And have carried out what pleases him in the fullest measure.

And how often they have risen proudly and boasted joyfully

Through him, and towered above the crowns of heads.

And I do not congratulate a man of merit on his offices,

Whose hands' clouds pour rain upon humankind.

Rather, I congratulate them on having him, for he has become to them

Like a pearl in a necklace, shining in darkness.

O my lord, behold a maiden, glorying in her beauty,

And she works on minds as wine does.

    فَقابل مُحيّاها بِطيب سَلام

    And she seeks no dowry from you but your acceptance of her;

So meet her face with a gracious greeting.

So may you ever rise on the horizon of happiness,

And your star be a perfect full moon among the shining stars.
