في ذمام الأَمير يأمَنُ خائفْ

في ذمام الأَمير يأمَنُ خائفْ

مِن زَمانٍ عَلَيهِ بِالجور حائفْ

مِن زَمانٍ عَلَيهِ بِالجور حائفْ

Under the prince's protection, a fearful man is safe

Under his protection the fearful are secure

From Time, which oppresses him unjustly.

From a time that was oppressively unjust

كَيفَ لا وَهوَ لِلمروءة يَحيى

كَيفَ لا وَهوَ لِلمروءة يَحيى

بَينَ باد مِن الأَنام وَعاكفْ

بَينَ باد مِن الأَنام وَعاكفْ

How could it be otherwise, when he lives for chivalry

How not, when he lives for manhood's sake

Among mankind, nomad and resident alike?

Amid nations while they toil and fast

وَهوَ للبرّ كَعبةٌ فازَ مِنها

وَهوَ للبرّ كَعبةٌ فازَ مِنها

في مَساعيهِ بِالأَمانيّ طائف

في مَساعيهِ بِالأَمانيّ طائف

And he is a Kaaba of beneficence, from which are won

He is a shrine of righteousness whence gain

A circling pilgrim's wishes through his endeavors.

In their quests they who seek boons sublime

وَهوَ في مصر للعفاة مَلاذٌ

وَهوَ في مصر للعفاة مَلاذٌ

وَبهم قَلبه مَدى الدَهر رائف

وَبهم قَلبه مَدى الدَهر رائف

And in Egypt he is a refuge for seekers of bounty,

To the destitute he is Egypt's refuge

And his heart is ever compassionate toward them.

His heart grieves for them through all time

وَعَلَيهُم وَذاك أَمر جليّ

وَعَلَيهُم وَذاك أَمر جليّ

ظلُّ عَلياه في الظَهيرة وارف

ظلُّ عَلياه في الظَهيرة وارف

And over them—and that is plain—

And that for them his high commandment is

The shade of his eminence spreads wide at noon.

His shade at noontide kindly spreads

لَيتَ شعري أَما دَرى الدَهر أَني

لَيتَ شعري أَما دَرى الدَهر أَني

نازل في حِماه بَينَ الطَوائف

نازل في حِماه بَينَ الطَوائف

I wonder: has Time not learned that I

Would that I knew, is the world not aware

Dwell in his protected domain among the various groups?

That I dwell under his wings midst crowds

فَلِماذا أَهابُهُ إِن دَعاني

فَلِماذا أَهابُهُ إِن دَعاني

لِنزال وَرامَني في المَواقف

لِنزال وَرامَني في المَواقف

Then why should I fear it, if it summons me

Why then should I dread him, if he calls me

To combat and assails me on the battlefields?

To battle and places me midst ranks

وَبِسَيف الأَمير تَحتَ لِواه

وَبِسَيف الأَمير تَحتَ لِواه

أَفلِقُ الهامَ مِن مهينٍ مخالف

أَفلِقُ الهامَ مِن مهينٍ مخالف

And with the prince's sword, beneath his banner,

With the Emir's sword beneath his banner

I cleave the skulls of any base opponent.

I cleave asunder the skulls of foes

وَإِذا ما كَبا بمثلي جَوادٌ

وَإِذا ما كَبا بمثلي جَوادٌ

فَهوَ عَني للضر بِالبَأس كاشف

فَهوَ عَني للضر بِالبَأس كاشف

And if ever a steed stumbles with one like me,

And if any horse like mine charges forth

Then he wards harm off from me with his might.

He from harm protects me in the fray

دامَ في عَصرنا مطاعاً مهيباً

دامَ في عَصرنا مطاعاً مهيباً

سافر الحَزم في جَميع الوَظائف

سافر الحَزم في جَميع الوَظائف

May he remain in our age obeyed and held in awe,

Long may he in our age command and be obeyed

His resolve manifest in every duty,

Traveling prudently in each role

نافذ الأَمر خاطِباً للمَعالي

نافذ الأَمر خاطِباً للمَعالي

راغِباً طُول عُمره في العَوارف

راغِباً طُول عُمره في العَوارف

Effective in command, wooing lofty honors,

His word prevails, he speaks loftily

Eager for deeds of kindness throughout his life,

Seeking length of days in noble deeds

فائِزاً بِالثَناء مِن كُل عَبد

فائِزاً بِالثَناء مِن كُل عَبد

بِطَريق المَديح وَالشُكر عارف

بِطَريق المَديح وَالشُكر عارف

Winning praise from every servant

Winning praise from every slave

Who knows the path of praise and gratitude.

Who knows the way of thanks and praise
