    The time has grown pleasant; allow me to embrace slender forms,

    and kiss sweet lips and cheeks.

    Put aside rebuking me, and cease your blame,

    for my heart does not deny the creed of love.

    And I, toward my beloveds, even if they shed my blood,

    am attentive, obedient, and a keeper of pledges.

    So do not break my covenant or the bond of my affection,

    nor let my reproacher and my envier gloat over me.

    Nor make every lover mourn over my soul—

    who imitates me in my passion and my slumber.

    And withhold from everyone but me that

    on which a lover's very existence turns.

    And never, in any circumstance, withhold union

    from a love-stricken man devoted to beautiful women.

    For I remain as faithful as you have known me,

    even if my yearning grows fierce and my estrangement lasts.

    How could I yearn for forgetfulness, when before it

    lie keen blades lodged within livers?

    God has willed that in love I should defy,

    for all time, every adviser and every prudent man,

    مِن الغيد مَيّاس القوام فَريد

    and cast off the cloak of modesty for a slender beloved,

    peerless among supple beauties, swaying in form;

    بِأَلحاظها تُصمي قُلوبَ أُسود

    and revel in the garden of abandon with gazelles

    whose glances strike lions' hearts dead;

    and gallop through the racecourse of every passion

    on steeds of pleasure, newly acquired and inherited.

    عَلى عاذل صَعب المَلام شَديد

    Nor do I desist, in love, from launching a raid

    against a reproacher harsh and fierce in blame;

    nor complain of my sickness and wasting

    and excessive burning love, except to a full-breasted woman.

    Perhaps she, as a phantom, if slumber visits me,

    will come when a star of good fortune appears.

    Then her apparition would gladden my breast with union,

    and my bough would grow green after its dryness.

    And the days gladden me in every reign

    whose renewer is Ismail, the finest of grandsons.

    Its renewer is Ismail, the loftiest of enthroned sovereigns,

    with resolve and sound judgment in affairs,

    رؤس العدا تومي لَهُ بسجود

    and justice from him that destroyed tyranny with a keen blade,

    before which the heads of foes bow in prostration;

    ببحر نَوال وافر وَمَديد

    and beneficence that erased the traces of poverty and want

    with a vast, abundant sea of bounty;

    بِأَزهى رِياض حَول كُل مشيد

    and gracious attention from him, through which Egypt adorned herself

    with the fairest gardens around every lofty edifice;

    بِما خَصَّها مِن خصبه بمزيد

    and management of the Nile's waters in every tract,

    with the extra share of its fertility he allotted to it;

    and bolstering of the king's reign, whose champion he is,

    through signs of success and unfurled banners.

    So, O king, you have attained every virtue,

    and won what no bounds can contain.

    And in safeguarding the land and its people, you have displayed,

    through penetrating thoughts, the resolves of proud lords.

    Your good fortune, at the Feast of Sacrifice and beyond,

    foretells lasting kingship and immortality.

    And in your radiant Egypt it hastens, as it wills,

    toward you with the highest rank and advancement.

    And cannons proclaim his preeminence,

    battering down every newly built rampart.

    Their lightning snatches away the enemies' sight

    whenever it flashes amid terrifying thunderclaps.

    And he whose heart the spear has not pierced

    falls by the sword into the depths of graves.

    And whoever flees the fire of rifles is driven

    back to it by volleys of iron from the zarkh.

    And whoever is swiftly overtaken by the awjiyān

    meets his death, coming or going.

    If they incline to peace, incline likewise; but if they refuse,

    then hasten against them from here with troops.

    And besiege their strongholds with every lion

    of the army who fears no encounter with a stubborn foe.

    And charge them with a charge like Haydar's,

    through which every rebel's traces are erased.

    فَما ذاكَ عَنهُم في الوَغى بِبَعيد

    And bring their appointed ends near, in their own homes;

    for that is not far from them in battle.

    And trust always in victory, O sovereign of the age,

    over an aggressor who feared no day of threatened doom.

    لحب عَلَيهِ جئتهم بِشُهود

    For the hearts of all people are treasuries

    of a love for which you have brought them witnesses;

    يَهيمون في أَغوارِها وَنُجود

    of a love through which the homelands' people have come

    to wander in rapture through their lowlands and highlands;

    of a love that sincerely called them to pledge allegiance,

    to which you have more right than any other leader.

    You have more right to it, since among them you revived

    the glories of their fathers and grandfathers.

    And you bestowed on them what cannot be duly thanked for

    by any composer of verse, in any tongue.

    Thus you were worthy of leadership, as

    is affirmed in the collected poems of every master poet.

    And here I come with glad tidings, giving a chronogram:

    Through Ismail the most auspicious feast shone bright.
