The filling of the canal watered Sa‘id’s lands,

Under an auspicious star rising in Egypt’s sky.

And rain from this sovereign’s palms

Flooded the villages in Beheira and Upper Egypt.

And clothed the lands in a robe of fertility,

Green through sound and judicious counsel.

And through his blessing, the clouds bore a message

To the Nile at his fixed, appointed time.

So he came in haste to water his land,

And bathe her in an ample flow from his flood.

And he pitied her deep longing; open before him lay

Her bosom, once the harvest was over.

And he yearned for her, then reddened at her arrival

With shyness, and revived what was dead in her with his coming.

And after watering, her rugged ground turned green,

And the plain yielded its accustomed wheat.

And through the mighty ruler’s governance she became fortified,

    Surrounded by armies and troops.

So may God preserve him for the homelands through

All time, in majesty and good fortune,

That through his justice he may furnish her with civilization

    And new progress among humankind,

And drive her foe away from her with cannons

    Whose fires thunder in war,

And shelter us forever beneath his spreading shade

Within her, and rub every envier’s nose in the dust,

And win fair renown and praise

From every servant skilled in praise,

As long as fertility declares in Egypt’s cradle, marking the date:

The filling of the canal watered Sa‘id’s lands.
