بَشيرa herald التَهانيcongratulations بِالسُرورwith joy حَبانيfavored me
فَأَطلقتso I loosened بِالشُكرwith gratitude الجَميلbeautiful لِسانيmy tongue
The herald of congratulations favored me with joy,
I bear glad tidings with joy, O most generous one
So I loosened my tongue in graceful thanks.
So I have unleashed with gratitude my eloquent tongue
وَقَدand indeed كُنتI had قاطَعتُsevered ties with الغَرامpassionate love وَأَهلهand its devotees
عَلىin رَغمspite of لبيmy mind فيin الهَوىlove وَجِنانيand my heart
And I had severed ties with passion and its devotees,
Though I had shunned love and its people
Despite my mind and heart's devotion to love.
Despite my heart's desire and my soul's urging
وَحاصرتُand I besieged حُصنthe fortress of الصَبرpatience حَتّىuntil مَلكتهI captured it
وَلَمand did not أَكتَرثI care بِالنَومabout sleep حينَwhen جَفانيit forsook me
And I besieged patience's fortress until I captured it,
And I had besieged the fortress of patience until I conquered it
And cared nothing for sleep when it forsook me.
And cared not for sleep when it betrayed me
وَعلقتand I pinned آمالthe hopes of العذولthe reproacher بسلوةon forgetting love
لِذَنبfor a wrong جَناهhe committed it مَنthe one who رَناgazed فَرَمانيthen shot me
And I pinned the reproacher's hopes on forgetting love,
And I hung my hopes of chastity on the firmness
For a wrong committed by the one who gazed and shot me.
For the sin committed by the one who denied and spurned me
وَماand not ذاكَthat إِلّاexcept أَنَّهُthat he خانَbetrayed عَهدَهُhis pledge
وَواعدand promised غَيريsomeone other than me فيin الهَوىlove بِتَدانيwith closeness
And that was nothing but his betrayal of his pledge,
That was only because he broke his vow
And his promising another closeness in love.
And made a pledge with another in passion
وَلَوand if أَنَّthat ليfor me طَرفاًan eye يُلِمُّalights بِهِupon it الكَرىslumber
وَيَطرقنيand visits me by night طَيفٌa dream-image لَهُof him لَكَفانيit would suffice for me
And if I had an eye upon which slumber alighted,
If only I had a glance that would wound separation
And a dream-image of him visited me by night, that would suffice.
And a specter would visit me belonging to him, it would suffice me
وَكَيفَand how يَزورvisits الطَيفthe dream-image مثليone like me وَإِنَّنيwhen indeed I am
حَليفُan ally of سهادsleeplessness لِلصُدودbecause of rejection أُعانيI suffer
And how could a dream-image visit one like me, when I am
But how can a specter visit one like me, when I am
An ally of sleeplessness, suffering from rejection?
A companion to wakefulness, enduring the cutting off
وَلَوand if دامَpersisted مَنthe one whom أَهوىI love عَلىin الغَدرbetrayal لاشتفىwould have found satisfaction
بإتلافthrough destroying رُوحيmy soul فيin الصَبابةardent longing شانيmy hater
And had the one I love persisted in betrayal, it would have gratified
If he who I love kept betraying
My foe through the ruin of my soul in ardent longing.
He would have remedied by destroying my soul in youth, my focus
وَلَكنهُbut he لَمّاwhen وَفىproved faithful بَعدafter هَجرهhis desertion
وَأَنعمand bestowed favor ليon me بِالوَصلwith union قَبلbefore هَوانيmy abasement
But when he proved faithful after his desertion,
But when after his estrangement, he fulfilled
And granted me union before my abasement,
And bestowed on me the gift of union before disgrace
وَعاهَدتهand I covenanted with him أَنthat لاnot يُغادرhe leave بَعدَهاafter that
وَبايَعَنيand he pledged himself to me طَوعاًwillingly وَقامَand attended بَشانيto my affairs
And I covenanted with him that he would never leave again,
And I made him vow to never abandon me afterwards
And he willingly pledged himself to me and tended to my affairs,
And he willingly pledged allegiance to me and upheld my position
صَبَوتُI yearned إِلَيهِfor him صَبوةa passion عامريةً'Amiri
وَقاطَعتand I broke with خلّاًa friend فيover هَواهlove for him لحانيrebuked me
I yearned for him with an 'Amiri passion,
I poured unto him a cup brimming over
And broke with a friend who rebuked me for loving him.
And severed for his love my neck for sacrifice
فَياso, O لائِميmy reproacher كفَّcease المَلامةreproach وَاِنتَهيand desist
فَماfor not اللَومreproach يُجديavails فيfor صَريعone laid low by غَوانيbeautiful women
So, my reproacher, cease your reproach and desist!
So enough, O critic, of blame and be done
For reproach is no use to one laid low by beautiful women.
For censure cannot benefit one slain by passion
وَفيand in مَذهَبيmy creed أَنthat الغَرامpassionate love هُوَit is الهُدىright guidance
وَأنand that الَّذيthe one who يَنهاكَforbids you عَنهُfrom it لَجانيis surely a wrongdoer
My creed is that passionate love is true guidance,
In my doctrine, love is the true guidance
And that whoever keeps you from it is surely a wrongdoer.
And he who prevents you from it is a transgressor
وَأَعجَبand strangest شَيءthing أَنthat يصدّكhe turns you away فيin الهَوىlove
عَنfrom الرُشدright guidance ضلّيلone deeply astray بِزورwith falsity of بَيانspeech
And strangest of all is that, in love, you are turned
The strangest thing is when an ignorant man in love
From right guidance by one deeply astray, through false speech.
Leads you astray from the right path with false rhetoric
أَبىrefused اللَهGod إلّاexcept أَنthat أَعيشI live مُتَيَّماًenslaved by love
مُجيباًanswering لِداعيto the caller of الحُبlove حَيثwherever دَعانيhe called me
God willed nothing but that I live enslaved by love,
God willed that I live bereft
Answering love's caller wherever he calls me,
Answering the call of love wherever it beckons me
مُطيعاًobedient لِأَحكامto the decrees of الهَوىlove وَمُخالِفاًand opposing
لِرَأيto the opinion of سَفيهٍa fool بِالغَرامover passionate love هَجانيreviled me
Obeying passion's decrees and opposing
Obeying the decrees of passion, and opposing
The judgment of a fool who reviled me for my love.
The opinion of a foolish man who rebuked me for passion
عَلىnotwithstanding أَنَّنيthat I ماnot ملتُI inclined قَطever لسلوةtoward forgetting love
وَإِنeven if ظَنّthought هَذاthis مَنthe one who وَشىslandered وَنَهانيand forbade me
Yet I have never once inclined to forgetting love,
Yet I have never become bored of firmness
Even if the one who slandered and forbade me thought so.
Even if this is presumed by the slanderer who discouraged me
فَلَولاfor were it not for الهَوىlove لَمwould not تَنتَشرunfurl ليَfor me رايةٌa banner
وَلَولاand were it not for الهَوىlove ماnot كانَwould be عزُّthe honor of مَكانيmy station
For without love, no banner of mine would have unfurled,
If not for passion, no banner would be raised for me
And without love, my station would have had no honor.
If not for passion, my place would not have become exalted
وَلَولاهand were it not for it ماnot نالَattained السَعادةَhappiness عَنتَرٌAntar
وَقَدand indeed أَرهَبterrified الأَبطالَthe champions يَومon the day of طِعانspear combat
And without it, Antar would not have attained happiness,
If not for it, Antar would not have attained glory
Though he terrified champions on the day of spear combat,
When he terrified all the heroes on the day of spears
وَذلتand submitted لعزتهto his might المُلوكthe kings وَأَصبَحواand they became

عَبيداًslaves لخطِّيٍّto a Khatti spear لَهُof his وَيَمانand a Yemeni sword
And kings bowed to his might and became
For his might, kings were humbled and became
Slaves to his Khatti spear and Yemeni sword.
Slaves to a tattooed dark-skinned man
فَكَمso how many مِنof جَهولan ignorant man هَذَّبrefined الحُبُّlove طَبعَهhis nature
وَعلَّمهand taught him ظَرفاًelegance وَحُسنَand beauty of مَعانيideas
For many an ignorant man, love has refined his nature
How many an uncouth person's nature was refined by love
And taught him elegance and beauty of thought.
And taught him charm and beautiful meaning
وَكَمand how many مِنof سَفيهa fool بِالهَوىthrough love فاقَsurpassed أَحنَفاًAhnaf

And how many a fool has surpassed Ahnaf through love,
How many a fool surpassed the wise through passion
And come to be pointed out by every finger!
And became a role model in every land
فَحتّامso how long فيin دينthe faith of الصَبابةardent longing وَالهَوىand love
يُعاندنيopposes me فيمَنover the one whom أُحبُّI love زَمانيmy time
So how long, in the faith of longing and love,
So whoever opposes me in the religion of youth and passion
Will my days thwart me over the one I love?
As long as I live, clashes with me over whom I love
وَماand no لِفُؤاديfor my heart جَنةa paradise غَيرother than وَصلهunion with him

My heart has no paradise but union with him,
And my heart has no paradise but his union
Even if he roasted me on the coals of his estrangement.
Even if, because of his estrangement, it is scorched by flames
أَأرغَبshould I turn away عَنهُfrom him وَهوَwhile he is فيin الحُسنbeauty مُفرَدٌpeerless

نَبيُّa prophet of جَمالٍbeauty لاnot يُقاسis compared بِثانيwith a second
Should I turn away from him, when he is peerless in beauty,
Shall I turn away from him when he is unmatched in beauty?
A prophet of beauty, whom no other can match?
A prophet of perfection with no second

Just as, in generosity, forbearance, learning, and fidelity,
Just as in his generosity, forbearance, knowledge and loyalty
My prince Ali is peerless—my keen sword and spearhead.
My prince, slayer of my enemies and protector
أَميرa prince بِهِin him دارthe House of العُلومSciences تَفاخَرَتtook pride

A prince in whom Dar al-Ulum has taken pride,
A prince through whom the house of knowledge took pride
And who raised there the finest edifices for excellence.
And for his virtue, built the best of buildings

As for my tongue, if I sought to restrain it
As for my tongue, if it dares to prevent
From thanking the most exalted lord, it would disobey me.
Thanking the Most High Lord, it would rebel against me

And as for my soul, it is inclined to praise him
If my mind strayed from praising him, it would guide me.
So if my heart strays from singing his praises, it would guide me
