    O Thābit, firm of resolve in counsel and judgment,

    and unwavering in purpose when dispelling illusions,

    في يَوم تعريض قرطاس لأقلام

    and the finest to refine prose through his delicacy,

    when a sheet of paper is set before pens;

    مجرّداً عَن بَلاغات وَأَفهام

    and he before whom Iyās of keen wit was left

    stripped of eloquence and understanding;

    أَبداه في نَثره مِن حسن أَحكام

    and he through whom we forgot ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd and what

    he displayed in his prose of fine craftsmanship;

    and he from the lights of whose insight knowledge was transmitted

    by men of learning, Arabs and non-Arabs.

    Indeed, I have devoted myself to letters out of passion

    for praising every noble, virtuous, exalted man,

    especially one like him, rooted in glory, firmly established

    in leadership among the elite and the common folk.

    I mean Thābit, steadfast of word, whose uplifted

    banners stand above banners and standards.

    And with the auspicious pen he attained what eluded

    the horsemen in their charges and bold advances.

    And I hope for no reward for what I have said,

    save that you accept me, with my weakness and diffidence,

    and my appearing in the robes of helplessness, astride

    the back of trust in God, in undoing and binding,

    and my steadfast patience under what has been hurled at me

    from the vicissitudes of my lifetime, my hours and my days.

    May you ever, O peerless in knowledge, stand proud

    above all mortals for your kindness and generosity,

    قابلتَه عِندَما وافى بإِكرام

    as long as a youth gives thanks for gracious efforts,

    one you received with honor when he arrived;

    or as long as your humble servant calls in his inmost heart:

    O Thābit, firm of resolve in counsel and judgment!
