O son of my affection, my hope in you has failed,

since you returned to betraying me after my faithfulness.

And you preferred my reproacher to me, until

it became clear to me that you had cast aside my brotherly affection.

And you deliberately broke your promise to me, while I

had hoped for a meeting, so my suffering grew.

And you were indeed the hypocrite's foe,

yet now he has become the foremost of friends.

So whenever he seeks some aim in love,

you do not oppose him, as though he were from heaven.

Yet if I speak a sincere adviser's words,

you do not heed what I have said, to my distress.

And you inclined toward the contemptible dullard,

after you betrayed me and spurned meeting me.

And by my life, if in your eyes I were worth

his fingernail among mortals, I would have gained my wish.

So this torment is enough for me, for

my enemies have gloated over me, O my enchanter.

And Time has shot me with an arrow of its own,

through which I have become dead among the living.

So if, after this, you seek

my companionship, then return to the beauty of sincere affection.

And keep away from a reproacher and an envier,

and a dullard far from the faith of loving you.

And if you do not desire my well-being, then be defiant,

since defiance has come from my adversaries.

And leave the heart in the blaze of rejection,

blazing above the embers of ghada wood.

Then perhaps God will have mercy on my body

and dispel suffering with healing near at hand.

And after that my tongue will utter:

O son of my affection, my hope in you has failed.
