O night of mid-Sha'ban, that month of high esteem,

May you ever remain in our Egypt a night of good fortune and gladness.

For in you Ali gained more than he desired,

And embraced the gazelle until the break of dawn.

And the oud hummed, and the qanun stood at his service,

As he wished, at whatever command he made known.

And the cup of serenity passed to right and left

Among them all, so they never recovered from their drunkenness.

And the hand of joys pledged them allegiance, gladdening

Their hearts; and they never ceased giving thanks.

And the tongues of fellowship spoke, recording the date:

“The full moon reached the sun of glory with ease.”
