O bān-tree bough, for whom, in obligatory and voluntary devotions,
O branch inclined to duties and traditions
The love-stricken one has stood, in secret and in public.
The lover arose in secret and in public
بِاللَهby God ياO أَيُّهاyou المَيّاسthe gracefully swaying one صلgrant union to دنفاًa lovesick man

By God, O swaying one, grant union to a lovesick man
By Allah, O cupbearer, pour a drink nearby
Whose eye has never known the sweetness of slumber.
Your tilted goblet knows not the joy of intimacy
وَاعطفand show compassion عَلَيهِto him فِداكyour ransom النَفسُthe soul مِنas a رَشأٍfawn
عَهديmy experience بِهِof him أَنَّهُthat he لِلعَهدto the pledge لَمhas not يَخُنbeen faithless
And show him compassion—my soul be your ransom, fawn that you are!
And show him favor, your soul its ransom from evil
I have known him never to betray a pledge.
My pledge to him is that he has not betrayed a pact
فَأَنتَfor you لِلحُسنof beauty ياO شَمسsun الضُحىof midmorning ملكٌa king

For you, O morning sun, are the king of beauty;
So you are to beauty, O sun of morn, a king
Rather, you are the soul, and that beauty is like the body.
Rather, you are spirit and that beauty the body
وَلائِميand my reproacher فيكَover you ماnot أَجدتavailed مَلامتُهhis reproach

وَكَيفَand how أُصغيI listen لِواشto a talebearer غَيرnot مؤتمنtrustworthy
And he who reproaches me for you—his reproach has availed nothing.
And I blame you for what I have found no fault
And how could I heed a talebearer who cannot be trusted?
And how can I heed a slanderer not to be trusted?
هَيهاتfar from it! أَسلوI cease loving وَليand I have فيin الحُبlove مَنزلةٌa station

Far be it that I should cease loving! Mine is a station in love
Far from me! I have in love a station
Below which stands every lover enthralled by it.
Beside which any other love is confused

And nothing distracts me from the beauty of his countenance
And I have no distraction from the beauty of his visage
Save praising Hasan, a nobleman of lofty standing.
Save praising a noble one, beautiful on high

The house of mastery over ancestry for him and father
Who, before him, had showered all orphans with favors.
Has always cared for orphans with kindness
