My two friends, excellence and learning have no worth

Amid ignorance, in the abode of hardship and burdens.

And a man of knowledge there is not like an ignoramus

Who came to it abased from the lands of non-Arabs.

For if we had Arab pride,

We would turn upon our enemies with keen swords.

Then if we died before attaining our desires,

We would be excused and depart with praise and honor.

And if we rescued our people from oppression,

We would triumph and gain eminence and spoils.

Is there not among you, people of Egypt, as among others,

A champion to look to in battle and resolute endeavors?

Are you not a match for sons ...

And especially the wicked, those of mounting evil?

Are they not the most misguided of all beings? And indeed they are

The most abject of creatures on the day throats are cut.

The people passed on to the fire and the blaze.

So we said, “We have found relief from ...”

And he is nothing but ...

Then he bolted doors by force,

And raised the pillars of lewdness and sin.

And he became devoted to the love of corruption.

So perdition to this one, of ...

He indeed dealt unjustly and harshly,

And sprinkled with misery and crimes.

And he did not follow in a tradition ...

Despite his ignorance, he revived the traces of the landmarks.

And by what he displayed, he made one forget Antar’s courage,

And Amr’s daring, along with Hatim’s generosity.

And like al-Ma’mun, with resolve and fidelity, he revived

The ways of happiness and learning among the noble.

But he committed, in our eyes, a sin

For which he became a neighbor of serpents in the blaze.

If only I had an army with which to meet them,

I would annihilate the farthest of them with a spear and keen sword,

And cleanse God’s earth of them by killing them,

And uphold the faith of al-Mustafa, the finest of Hashim’s clan,

And become like the lion Ibn Ayyub, enamored

Of striking their necks and wrists.

So, people of Egypt, do not sleep, and defend

The faith and the homelands against those who commit forbidden acts.

For your wealth has become booty in their possession,

And your sons are either slaves or servants.

And after you had been suns of knowledge,

You were eclipsed and became like beasts.

And you lived in abasement after prestige and honor,

And the calamities of oppression came round upon you.

So do not neglect to cut off the last of their offspring,

For they have filled all battlefields with wickedness.
