Bring me a drink of the saliva of a sweet mouth.

For estrangement has so often changed my state.

And so often my eye has kept vigil because you are far away,

Until my reproachers pitied me in love.

And through excessive longing I have become unseen,

Save for my phantom when I call out.

So have mercy, be generous, show tenderness toward me, and heal me

Of my illness, after estrangement, with reunion.

For I have endured love and its humiliation

When I was struck by separation's arrows.

And I bore every wrong from you for the closeness

I won within the heart; I am not one to forget.

How could I forget, when I have lodged in a courtyard

With Hafiz, the fairest of mankind, the munificent?

O Muhammad, the seat of the caliphate shines,

Its lights aglow with your glittering radiance.

And you came to your Egypt, preserving its affection,

Despite the one who hates you upon its hills.

And you attained what you hope for, so he died of his rage,

Of anguish—so live among us with your mind at ease.

And you came with glad tidings, so I said, marking the date:

May the finest good fortune gladden you, Hafiz!
