Bring it, O drinking companion, from a slender youth's cheek;
Bring it here, O cupbearer, from the cheek of a gazelle,
The sword of his two glances is keen along its cutting edges.
A sword whose glances in battle are cutting,

A sip of which was sweet to me in ardent love.
Pleasant to me in youth with bubbles rising.

Its vicissitudes have mellowed and softened.

For in Egypt a chief took charge of affairs,
Now in Egypt rules a noble leader,
True to his promise, he gave aid through noble deeds.
True to his word, generous and gallant,

After a terror before which the armored warrior quailed.
After fear that overwhelmed the valiant,

He restored institutions after their decline,
Of the sciences his grandfather had bestowed.
With the sciences by which glory is graced,

Through which the enemy army was about to roam.
When the armies of enemies through it roamed,
