A poem came to me from the loving friend,

So my thoughts took delight in hearing it.

And it was like a lush, flourishing garden,

Radiant with blossoms, sweet with fruit.

Its opening dispensed with the sun and moon, just as

Your countenance dispensed with the moons.

The hands of joy reached out with it, so I thought them

The hands of a drinking companion, with cups of wine in them.

So I accepted it and grew drunk on its words,

And thanked the author of these verses.

O son of al-Sa'id, and you who are the scion

From whom glad tidings have reached us:

Rejoice in your father's decoration, just as

You congratulated me, O best of the good.

And surely your rank will rise to lofty stations,

And the cub remains like a fierce lion.

So a thousand thousand greetings to you from me,

And from the loving friend Muhammad al-Najjar.
