هناء بِهِ للملك جاء بَشيرُ

هناء بِهِ للملك جاء بَشيرُ

إِلى مصر مِنهُ بِالصَفاء يشيرُ

إِلى مصر مِنهُ بِالصَفاء يشيرُ

A herald has come with joy for the throne,

A harbinger came to the king with glad tidings

signaling serenity from him to Egypt.

Pointing to Egypt with purity

وَيخبرها أَن الأَمير محمداً

وَيخبرها أَن الأَمير محمداً

يُشرفها مِنهُ إِلَيهِ مَصير

يُشرفها مِنهُ إِلَيهِ مَصير

And he tells her that Prince Muhammad

And informing her that Prince Muhammad

honors her as rule passes from him to him.

Is honoring her, to him is her return

فَإِن ساءَها يَوماً غِيابُ وليِّها

فَإِن ساءَها يَوماً غِيابُ وليِّها

فَتوفيق مَولاها العَزيز نَصير

فَتوفيق مَولاها العَزيز نَصير

If her ruler's absence grieved her one day,

So if the absence of her guardian ever saddened her

then Tawfiq, her mighty lord, is her champion.

Then the support of her Glorious Master is her ally

إِذا سَيد مِنهُم خَلا قام سَيد

إِذا سَيد مِنهُم خَلا قام سَيد

كَريم بِأَحوال العِباد بَصير

كَريم بِأَحوال العِباد بَصير

When one lord among them departs, another rises,

Whenever a master from them is absent, a generous master

noble and well acquainted with the people's circumstances.

Kind to the state of servants, seeing, arises

وَإِن كانَ هَذا الدَهر أَخطا فذنبه

وَإِن كانَ هَذا الدَهر أَخطا فذنبه

يُقابَل بِالغُفران وَهوَ خَطير

يُقابَل بِالغُفران وَهوَ خَطير

And if this age has erred, its offense

And if this world was ever unjust, its sin

is met with forgiveness, though it is grave.

Is met with forgiveness and it is risky

وَتَصفح عَنهُ حَيث والى مهذباً

وَتَصفح عَنهُ حَيث والى مهذباً

لَهُ السَعد في خَير البِلاد سَمير

لَهُ السَعد في خَير البِلاد سَمير

And she pardons it, since it has favored a refined man

And pardoned from it when he reached puberty well-mannered

whose nightly companion in the finest of lands is good fortune.

For him is happiness in the best of lands, uplifting

هُوَ القائم الهادي لِأُمته الَّذي

هُوَ القائم الهادي لِأُمته الَّذي

محيّاه بَدر في الظَلام مُنير

محيّاه بَدر في الظَلام مُنير

He is his nation's leader and guide, whose

He is the standing guide for his nation who

face is a full moon shining in the darkness.

His life the full moon in the darkness illuminated

هُوَ الآمر الناهي بِأَشرَف دَولة

هُوَ الآمر الناهي بِأَشرَف دَولة

عَلى العَدل فيهِ يَستَقرّ سَرير

عَلى العَدل فيهِ يَستَقرّ سَرير

He commands and forbids in the noblest state;

He is the commander, the forbidder in the noblest state

through him, a throne stands firm upon justice.

Upon justice in it rests the throne

لَهُ اللَه مِن صَدر فَخيم مؤيد

لَهُ اللَه مِن صَدر فَخيم مؤيد

بِنَصر عَزيزٍ يَتقيهِ مبير

بِنَصر عَزيزٍ يَتقيهِ مبير

God is with him—what a majestic chief, upheld

God has supported him from an honored mighty chest

by a mighty victory that a destroyer fears.

With mighty victory protecting him from one who judges

لَهُ الفَضل بِالتَحقيق يَشَهد أَنَّهُ

لَهُ الفَضل بِالتَحقيق يَشَهد أَنَّهُ

بِما نالَ مِن عبَد الحَميد جَدير

بِما نالَ مِن عبَد الحَميد جَدير

His merit truly bears witness that he

He indeed deserves what he attained

deserves what he has received from Abd al-Hamid.

From the servant Abdul Hamid, according to verification

نَشا رافِلاً في حلة الملك وَالعُلا

نَشا رافِلاً في حلة الملك وَالعُلا

فَطابَ لَهُ بَينَ المُلوك عَبير

فَطابَ لَهُ بَينَ المُلوك عَبير

He grew up resplendent in the robe of kingship and high honor,

He grew wearing the garb of royalty and supremacy

and his fragrance grew sweet among kings.

So his scent became fragrant among kings

وَساس أُمور العالمين وَإِنَّهُ

وَساس أُمور العالمين وَإِنَّهُ

عَلى حلِّ كُل المُشكلات قَدير

عَلى حلِّ كُل المُشكلات قَدير

And he governed the affairs of all peoples; indeed, he

And he managed the affairs of two worlds, and he

can resolve every difficulty.

Is capable of solving every complexity

وَكَيفَ وَقَد لاحَ الفَلاح بِلا خَفا

وَكَيفَ وَقَد لاحَ الفَلاح بِلا خَفا

عَلى وَجهِهِ في المَهد وَهوَ صَغير

عَلى وَجهِهِ في المَهد وَهوَ صَغير

How could it be otherwise, when success shone plainly

And how when success beamed without concealment

upon his face in the cradle, while he was yet small?

On his face in the cradle when he was young

فَكانَ بِما أَبداه مِن حُسن سيره

فَكانَ بِما أَبداه مِن حُسن سيره

يَرى أَنَّهُ بَينَ الصُدور كَبير

يَرى أَنَّهُ بَينَ الصُدور كَبير

Thus, through the fine conduct he displayed,

So he was, due to the good conduct he demonstrated

he saw that he stood great among the chiefs.

Considered great among the hearts

وَلما أَراد اللَه تَمييز مصره

وَلما أَراد اللَه تَمييز مصره

وإِحياءها بِالغَيث وَهوَ مطير

وإِحياءها بِالغَيث وَهوَ مطير

And when God willed to distinguish His Egypt

And when God wanted to favor Egypt

and revive her with rain, which He sends down,

And revive it with rain and it is pouring

أَتاحَ لَها مَأمونها كَي يَصونَها

أَتاحَ لَها مَأمونها كَي يَصونَها

وَيَحفظ فيها أَهلَها وَيمير

وَيَحفظ فيها أَهلَها وَيمير

He provided her with her trusted guardian to protect her

He made its safe haven available so he protects it

and safeguard her people within her and supply provisions,

And keeps its people safe in it and walks about

ويملأها خَصباً بيمن وَفطنة

ويملأها خَصباً بيمن وَفطنة

يَزول بِها عِندَ اليَسار عَسير

يَزول بِها عِندَ اليَسار عَسير

and fill her with plenty through good fortune and discernment,

And fills it with fertility by good fortune and perception

through which hardship gives way to ease.

So hardship in times of ease is removed

وَلا شَكَّ في هَذا المَقال فَإِنَّهُ

وَلا شَكَّ في هَذا المَقال فَإِنَّهُ

لَها في جَميع الحادِثات ظَهير

لَها في جَميع الحادِثات ظَهير

There is no doubt in this claim, for he

And there is no doubt in this saying, for he

is her supporter in every calamity.

Is its supporter in all tribulations

فَكَم قَد رَأَت مِنهُ بِأَيام بؤسها

فَكَم قَد رَأَت مِنهُ بِأَيام بؤسها

نَعيماً وَكَم أَثرى لَدَيهِ فَقير

نَعيماً وَكَم أَثرى لَدَيهِ فَقير

How often, in the days of her misery, has she known from him

So how often in its days of misery did it see

bliss; how many a poor man has grown rich under him!

Comfort from him, and how many poor were enriched by him

وَكَم بِمَساعيه الجَليلة حلّ مِن

وَكَم بِمَساعيه الجَليلة حلّ مِن

قُيود التَجافي وَالبلاء أَسير

قُيود التَجافي وَالبلاء أَسير

How often, through his noble endeavors, was freed from

And how many in shackles of estrangement and affliction

the fetters of estrangement and affliction a captive!

Were released by his great efforts

وَكَم مِن أَياد للمليك عَلى الوَرى

وَكَم مِن أَياد للمليك عَلى الوَرى

يَفيض لَها بَحر بمصر غَزير

يَفيض لَها بَحر بمصر غَزير

How many favors the monarch has bestowed upon mankind—

And how much overflowing seas in Egypt

for them a bounteous sea overflows in Egypt!

Stream to the king’s hands over mankind

فَإِن رمتُمُ عَنهُ بَياناً فَإِنَّهُ

فَإِن رمتُمُ عَنهُ بَياناً فَإِنَّهُ

حَكيم عَليم بِالوَفاء شَهير

حَكيم عَليم بِالوَفاء شَهير

If you seek an account of him, then he is

So if you have discarded a description of him, then he

wise, learned, renowned for fidelity;

Is a wise scholar, well-known for loyalty

كَميٌّ همام عادل ذو فراسة

كَميٌّ همام عادل ذو فراسة

تَقيّ نقيّ بِالنَجاح يُشير

تَقيّ نقيّ بِالنَجاح يُشير

a valiant warrior, high-minded, just, endowed with discernment;

Ambitious, protective, judicious, with insight

devout and pure, pointing toward success;

Devout, pure, successful, implying

رؤوف رَحيم طاهر الذَيل محسن

رؤوف رَحيم طاهر الذَيل محسن

بآيات زجر للمسيء نَذير

بآيات زجر للمسيء نَذير

compassionate, merciful, his hem unstained, beneficent;

Merciful, compassionate, immaculate helper

a warner to the wrongdoer with signs of rebuke.

Warning the sinner with deterrent signs

لَهُ سيرة الفاروق وَالعادل الَّذي

لَهُ سيرة الفاروق وَالعادل الَّذي

بِمَنظومه أَثنى عَلَيهِ جَرير

بِمَنظومه أَثنى عَلَيهِ جَرير

His is the conduct of al-Faruq and of the just man whom

His is the conduct of Al-Farooq and the just one whom

Jarir praised in his verse.

Al-Jurayri praised in his composition

وَكُل امرئ في عَصره عز نَصره

وَكُل امرئ في عَصره عز نَصره

بِأَوصافه دُون السؤال خَبير

بِأَوصافه دُون السؤال خَبير

And everyone in his age—may his victory be mighty—

And everyone in his time, the might of his victory

knows his qualities without asking.

Without asking, is an expert in his traits

وَلا يُنكر الشَمسَ المُضيئة في السَما

وَلا يُنكر الشَمسَ المُضيئة في السَما

مِن الناس إِلّا أَكمَهٌ وَضَرير

مِن الناس إِلّا أَكمَهٌ وَضَرير

No one denies the shining sun in the sky

None would deny the shining sun in the sky

among mankind, save one born blind or bereft of sight.

Except one blind or sightless

وَقَد أَجمَعوا في كُل ناد وَمحفل

وَقَد أَجمَعوا في كُل ناد وَمحفل

عَلى أَنَّهُ لِلمُستجير مجير

عَلى أَنَّهُ لِلمُستجير مجير

And they have agreed, in every gathering and assembly,

And they have unanimously agreed in every club and sitting place

that he shelters whoever seeks his protection.

That he is a protector for the seeker of refuge

كَذا صَح في الأَخبار مِن قَبل أَنَّهُ

كَذا صَح في الأَخبار مِن قَبل أَنَّهُ

لِمصر عَلى طُول الزَمان وَزير

لِمصر عَلى طُول الزَمان وَزير

Likewise, reports long ago confirmed that he

Thus it is confirmed in the news before

is Egypt's minister throughout all time.

That he is Egypt’s minister for a long time

وَإِن المَعالي نبَّأت أَن رَوضه

وَإِن المَعالي نبَّأت أَن رَوضه

بِأَنوار أَزهار السَداد نَضير

بِأَنوار أَزهار السَداد نَضير

And high deeds foretold that his garden

And the High Office notified that its meadow

is lush with the radiance of rectitude's blossoms.

Is parallel to the meadow of integrity’s blossoms

فمن ذا الَّذي في الحُكم يَزعَم أَنَّهُ

فمن ذا الَّذي في الحُكم يَزعَم أَنَّهُ

لَهُ بَعدَ ما قامَ الدَليل نَظير

لَهُ بَعدَ ما قامَ الدَليل نَظير

Who, then, can claim that in governance he

So who among the rulers claims that he

has a peer, now that the proof stands clear?

Has an equivalent after the proof has been established?

أَبى اللَه إلا أن يَكون هُوَ الَّذي

أَبى اللَه إلا أن يَكون هُوَ الَّذي

بِتَدبيره السامي لمصر يدير

بِتَدبيره السامي لمصر يدير

God would have none but him be the one

God willed that he be the one

who governs Egypt through his lofty statecraft

Who with his sublime management directs Egypt

وَينقذها مِن وَرطة الضَيم وَالعَنا

وَينقذها مِن وَرطة الضَيم وَالعَنا

وَذاكَ عَلى هَذا العَزيز يَسير

وَذاكَ عَلى هَذا العَزيز يَسير

and saves her from the peril of oppression and hardship;

And saves it from the narrowness of injustice and enmity

and that is easy for this mighty lord.

And that is easy upon this Almighty

وَلا عَجَبٌ فيما يُحقَّقُ أَنَّها

وَلا عَجَبٌ فيما يُحقَّقُ أَنَّها

بِها نَفعُه للعالمين كَثير

بِها نَفعُه للعالمين كَثير

Nor is there any wonder in the established truth that

And it is no wonder that it is verified

within her, his benefit to all mankind is great.

That through it, his usefulness to the worlds is plenty

وَإِن عَلى الإِخلاص مِنهُ لِأَهلِها

وَإِن عَلى الإِخلاص مِنهُ لِأَهلِها

بُنِي وَهوَ في عَهد الفِطام ضَمير

بُنِي وَهوَ في عَهد الفِطام ضَمير

Indeed, upon his sincere devotion to her people

And built upon his sincerity to its inhabitants

his conscience was founded while he was yet at weaning age.

In the days of weaning, is his conscience

وَفاضَ عَلَيها حينَ أَلقَت زِمامها

وَفاضَ عَلَيها حينَ أَلقَت زِمامها

إِلَيهِ مِن البر العَميم غَدير

إِلَيهِ مِن البر العَميم غَدير

And there overflowed upon her, when she surrendered her reins

And a gushing sea of bounty poured unto it

to him, a pool of all-embracing kindness.

When it handed its reins to him

وَدُونيَ فيما يَستَحق مِن الثَنا

وَدُونيَ فيما يَستَحق مِن الثَنا

عَلَيهِ لَبيد وَالنَبيل زهير

عَلَيهِ لَبيد وَالنَبيل زهير

And beneath me, in the praise he deserves,

And I fall short in the praise it deserves

stand Labid and noble Zuhayr.

Upon it Labeed and noble Zuhair

فَباللَه هنُّوه مَعي بإِمارة

فَباللَه هنُّوه مَعي بإِمارة

بِها يَزدَهي في الخافقين مُشير

بِها يَزدَهي في الخافقين مُشير

So, by God, join me in congratulating him on an emirate

So by God cheer with me his rule

in which a marshal glories across the two horizons.

Through which good fortune smiles in the horizons

وَقُولوا لَهُ بُشرى بِتخت صَدارة

وَقُولوا لَهُ بُشرى بِتخت صَدارة

يَدوم عَلَيهِ ما أَقام ثَبير

يَدوم عَلَيهِ ما أَقام ثَبير

And tell him: Glad tidings of a throne of leadership,

And say unto him glad tidings of the seat of precedence

upon which he shall remain as long as Thabir stands!

Which endures through however long Thabit remains

وِللعز قال المَجد فيهِ مؤرِخاً

وِللعز قال المَجد فيهِ مؤرِخاً

أَيا عز تَوفيق لِمصر أَمير

أَيا عز تَوفيق لِمصر أَمير

And Glory said to Might of him, marking the date:

And to might history said describing him

O Might, Tawfiq is Egypt's emir!

Oh might of success, Egypt’s Commander
