O you who forsake me, where is the time of old,
O my companion, where is the ancient time
and a sweet tryst, and a tender pledge?
And the sweet tryst and companionable pact?

Days when we watered the nights with hopes,
We whiled away the nights with wishes
and light was in the farthest reaches of deep space;
And light in the vast, lofty space

our trysts would toy with the dawn,
Our appointments toy with the dawn
for dawn was drowned in what we wished for.
Thus the dawn in what we wish is drowned

Days when there poured down, at a wish
Days whereon desire is sated
of ours, a sky of gushing light,
From us in a space with radiant light

Or the sanctity of our wedding nights
behind a veil of thin cloud?
Is hidden behind a thin cloud's veil

Has that love died—has it died, that which
That love which died, died that which
enchained my soul, a dawn of unfettered poetry?
Enchained my soul at dawn of unleashed verse

And our flame was extinguished, and they drank their fill—
And our torch was extinguished and
of us, the nights and the wide-spreading morning;
Our nights quenched, and the brisk morn

O you who forsake me, I am still youth's twin,
O my companion, still the adolescence of morn
I strut in its sleeves, adorned with agate.
I wrap myself in its soft crimson

My night is a cup, and I am the one who drinks
Laila is a cup, and I the drinker
love as nectar, before nectar came to be.
Love before being syrup was a draught

So return to your languishing lover, and drink as
So return to your wine-skins, and drink as
you used to from my cup, and feast your eyes on the gleam.
You used to from my cup, sipping the wine

Return, the roses will again delight us
more, and its awakening fragrance will grow dewy.
And their perfume will wake, newly sprung
