I am a part of you, yet

Suha and the star have held my eyelid fast.

In me is sorrow like that in you,

And some of my plight surpasses yours.

These are your seasons; you have not been spared

    Their cares, nor have I.

I have a winter born of your misery,

Drowned in torrents from rain clouds.

    In it the wind groans,

And laments beneath the clouded gloom.

Then, when it breaks loose, there reels

The world, with every lofty mountain peak.

And I feel that the hand of misery

Rings bells of sorrow within me.

    I have a radiant spring

That struts with its long, trailing train.

    It never ends without returning

    With gladness and with wishes.

I am your hidden secret; I do not

Know whether to grieve or to sing.

O earth, here I am, brimming

With all the injustice within you.

You give birth, then escort to the grave

Your sons, from burial to burial.

And I am the father of hopes—how many

Sweet-voiced hopes have I escorted to the grave!

I am a part of you, except that

Beauty is my cups and my wine jar.

I soar toward it, and I profess no faith

If I bow to anything but beauty.

I am of you, but I do not love you,

For dust is the companion of frailty.

My thought is the white cloud

    Left in the resounding firmament.

And my sides hold a yearning

For the stars of the darkest night.

So it is as though I were of them, or

As though they had been cut from me.
