    And the day you trod the earth and we stood,

    your creatures—or so we claim—

    the earth swayed with pride and grew light,

    spreading life and growing lush with grass.

    تجورُ وآونةً تَعذُبُ

    In it is an ecstasy like the one you give me;

    it is cruel, and at times grows sweet.

    And when you returned to what lies beyond

    the clouds, and the star veiled you,

    a wind of grief swept down upon the universe,

    and its mighty whirlwinds rose.

    And thousands of years passed over

    thousands of ages that never run dry.

    And you are hidden, as though you do not

    feel longing or comprehend it.

    You left your lad alone, a wanderer,

    on earth, with no aim.

    And what need have I, when I am the capable one,

    the mighty, the obeyed, the feared?

    If I wished, I could dry up this Euphrates,

    and move Lebanon, were I so inclined.

    And yesterday I commanded the winds, and they blew

    over the universe, shrieking their lament.

    وتهوي وأخرى بها تَضربُ

    So I saw only stars sinking

    and falling, and others striking against them;

    and only a weeping, scattered dawn,

    its ashen light betraying it.

    يردّده الجبل المتعب

    And nothing struck the ear but wailing,

    echoed by the weary mountain;

    والغاب مجرودة سيِّب

    and only the music of branches breaking,

    and the forests stripped bare, unbound;

    and only the roar of the deep seas,

    their anger-stirring breast seething with it.

    Surely, if I told the sun, 'Wait,'

    sunset would halt at its horizon.

    And it quivers whenever I raise my hand,

    and the vast, desert-like face of darkness clears.

    I laid my hands upon created things,

    all of them; so they are as I wish.
