يَقولُsays بَنوthe sons of الحَمراءِal-Hamra لَوif أَنَّthat جُنحَناour wing
يَطيرُflies لعشّاكمwould give you supper بِشُؤبوبِwith a burst of وابِلِheavy rain
The sons of al-Hamra say, 'If our wing
Were to fly, it would serve you a torrential shower for supper;
وَضِقتُمand you were hard-pressed بِهِby it ذَرعاًin endurance وَجاشَتand seethed نُفوسُكُمyour souls
وَماand not مَنَعتكُمprotected you مانِعاتُthe defenses of المَعاقِلِthe strongholds
And you would be unable to bear it, and your souls would seethe,
And the strongholds' defenses would not protect you.'
فَقدfor indeed كانَwas طَردُthe driving off of الجُنحِthe wing إِذwhen طارَflew نَحوَناtoward us
كَذِبّانِlike the flies of حُشٍّa privy أَوor كُدودِlike the worms of المَزابِلِdung heaps
For the wing, when it flew toward us, was driven off
Like privy-flies, or worms in dung heaps.
وَهاجَتand raged شَآبيبُshowers of الحُتوفِdeaths عَلَيكُمupon you
بِرَعدٍwith thunder وَبَرقٍand lightning سُجَّمٍstreaming وَهَواطِلِand pouring down
And showers of death raged over you,
With thunder and lightning, streaming and pouring down.
لَظَلَّتwould surely keep سُيوفُthe swords of الهِندِIndia تَحصُدُreaping جَمعَكُمyour host
حَصادَthe reaping of زُروعٍcrops أَينَعَتhave ripened لِلمَناجِلِfor the sickles
The swords of India would surely keep reaping your host,
As one reaps crops ripened for the sickles.
وَلَمّاand when رَأَوناthey saw us راجِفينَsurging forward إِلَيهِمtoward them
تَوَلّواthey turned away سِراعاًswiftly خَوفَfor fear of وَقعِthe blows of المناصِلِsword-blades
And when they saw us surging toward them,
They fled swiftly, fearing the blows of sword-blades.
فَسِرناso we advanced إِلَيهِمtoward them وَالرِّماحُand the spears تَنوشُهُمstrike at them
كَوَقعِlike the thrusts of الصَّياصيhorns تَحتَbeneath رَهجِthe haze of القَساطِلِbattle-dust
So we advanced toward them, while spears struck at them,
Like the thrusts of horns beneath a haze of battle-dust.
فَلَمso not يَبقَremained مِنهُمof them غَيرُexcept عانٍa captive مُصَفَّدٍfettered

So none of them remained but a fettered captive,
Being led as a prisoner, bound fast in chains,

And another of them, a fugitive—narrow had grown
The earth around him; he reeled with anguish and turmoil.

You met a massed, shelter-seeking host of ours,
Skilled at striking heads beneath the downpours.

A lion leads them—a mighty, powerfully built lion,
A kindler of wars, noble and far from obscure.

With which he shielded the faith of guidance from every ignorant man.

Indeed, Sawwar drew a sword of Indian steel against you,
With which he severs heads as one severs joints.

Through him God slew those who banded together
Against us, and were people of lies and falsehood.

He advanced against the sons of al-Hamra when their doom had come,
With a host like a mountain, vast and proudly striding.

The spacious earth is too narrow for it—a massive host,
Huge, galloping hard, with many neighing steeds.

You set the millstone of war turning, and it turned against you,
With swift death, by which God has annihilated you.
