الدِّرعُthe coat of mail قَدindeed صارَتhas become شِعاريmy inner garment فَماso not
أَبسُطُI spread out حاشاهاits hem لِتَهجاعِfor sleep
The coat of mail has become my inner garment, so I do not
My coat of mail has become my banner, so I
spread its hem out for sleep.
Never unfold it for boasting.
وَالسَّيفُand the sword إِنif قَصَّرَهُmakes it short صانِعٌa craftsman
طَوَّلَهُlengthens it يَومَon the day of الوَغىbattle باعيmy reach
And the sword, if a craftsman makes it short,
If the swordmaker shortened the sword,
my reach lengthens it on the day of battle.
It becomes longer on the day of battle when the caller calls.
وَماnor كُمَيتيmy bay horse ليto me بِمُستَقصَرٍdeemed inadequate
إِذاwhen دَعانيsummons me لِلِّقاto combat داعِa caller
Nor do I find my bay horse wanting
My ambition is not too short
when a caller summons me to combat.
When the caller calls me to the encounter.
هَذاthis الَّذيthat which أَسعىI strive لَهُfor it جاهِداًstrenuously
كُلُّevery اِمرِئٍman فيin شَأنِهِhis affairs ساعِstriving
This is what I strive for with all my might;
This is what I strive for, exerting myself,
every man strives in his own affairs.
While every man is engrossed in his own pursuit.
