ليالٍ تهوي نحو قارعة الزمن
يضجُّclamors بهاwithin them عمرٌa lifetime ينوحlaments علىover الوطنthe homeland
يضجُّ بها عمرٌ ينوح على الوطن
Nights plunge toward time's thoroughfare.
A lifetime clamors within them, mourning the homeland.
ستارa curtain رياحwinds ينهضrises الآنnow فيin الدُّجىthe darkness
ستار رياح ينهض الآن في الدُّجى
علىon شرفةa balcony الصحراءthe desert يستنهضrouses الدِّمَنremains of old camps
على شرفة الصحراء يستنهض الدِّمَن
A curtain of winds rises now in the darkness.
On the desert's balcony, it rouses the remains of old camps.
تفيضpour forth غبارًاdust أنجمٌstars فيin لَظىblaze المدىthe distance
تفيض غبارًا أنجمٌ في لَظى المدى
تشاغلdistract وهمًاan illusion طرَّزembroidered الأفقthe horizon بالمِحَنwith ordeals
تشاغل وهمًا طرَّز الأفق بالمِحَن
Stars pour forth dust in the blaze of distance.
They distract an illusion that embroidered the horizon with ordeals.
تلوثtaint فجاجravines القحطdrought تزفرexhale أنَّةa moan
تلوث فجاج القحط تزفر أنَّة
بهاwithin it شفةa lip غِنىabundance علىupon يبسهاits dryness الشَّجنsorrow
بها شفة غِنى على يبسها الشَّجن
They taint drought's ravines, exhaling a moan.
Within it is a lip of abundance, sorrow upon its dryness.
لهاit has بينamong آهاتsighs البراريthe wilds دموعهاits tears
لها بين آهات البراري دموعها
تسيلflow وجفنٌand an eyelid يستحيلbecomes علىunder الوَسَنdrowsiness
تسيل وجفنٌ يستحيل على الوَسَن
It has its tears amid the sighs of the wilds.
They flow, while an eyelid grows, under drowsiness,
ضريرًاblind يكنharbors وجدlonging الحتوفdeaths وصبرهاand their patience
ضريرًا يكن وجد الحتوف وصبرها
علىat مهلa slow pace تدكوflare (uncertain reading) بفتنتهthrough its enchantment الإِحَنrancors
على مهل تدكو بفتنته الإِحَن
Blind, harboring the longing of deaths and their patience.
Slowly, rancors [flare] through its enchantment.
ويظمأand thirsts نهرٌa river للحياةfor life بنارهin its fire
ويظمأ نهرٌ للحياة بناره
وتغدوand become بلاwithout نجوىintimate whispers الطيورthe birds، بلاwithout سكنshelter
وتغدو بلا نجوى الطيور، بلا سكن
And a river thirsts for life in its fire.
And birds are left without intimate whispers, without shelter.
يشبُّflares up حريقًاas a fire يرضعsuckles الجمرthe embers حلمناour dream
يشبُّ حريقًا يرضع الجمر حلمنا
يميسsways هشيمًاas dry tinder فيin خطاهits footsteps شذاfragrance الفتنstrife
يميس هشيمًا في خطاه شذا الفتن
Our dream flares into a fire, suckling the embers.
The fragrance of strife sways like dry tinder in its footsteps.
تيبسhas withered عشبٌgrass فيin فضاءan expanse رحيبةspacious
تيبس عشبٌ في فضاء رحيبة
ومنand from عطشٍthirst يتساقطfalls الغيمthe clouds كالكفنlike a shroud
ومن عطشٍ يتساقط الغيم كالكفن
Grass has withered in a spacious expanse.
And from thirst the clouds fall like a shroud.
إذاwhen مرَّpasses عمرٌa lifetime للعذابinto torment بشدِّهby drawing it
إذا مرَّ عمرٌ للعذاب بشدِّه
إلىtoward شغفٍa passion للعدلfor justice، والوعدand the promise لمhas not يبينbecome clear
إلى شغفٍ للعدل، والوعد لم يبين
When a lifetime passes into torment, drawn
Toward a passion for justice, while the promise remains unclear,
يمورseethes بجرحwith the wound of الصمتsilence تنزفbleeds حريقهits fire
يمور بجرح الصمت تنزف حريقه
يشبُّflares up سعيرًاas an inferno قدalready تظىblazed (unclear form) بكلthroughout all of الوطنthe homeland
يشبُّ سعيرًا قد تظى بكل الوطن
It seethes with silence's wound, bleeding its fire.
It flares into an inferno, already [ablaze] throughout the homeland.
أغثناaid us وأدركand rescue ماwhat تبقّىremains، نهارناour day
أغثنا وأدرك ما تبقّى، نهارنا
ظلامٌdarkness، وأدركناand rescue us، أغثناaid us أباO father of الحسنal-Hasan
ظلامٌ، وأدركنا، أغثنا أبا الحسن
Aid us and save what remains; our day
Is darkness. And save us; aid us, Abu al-Hasan.
