أَبا العلا يا هلال الهَزل وَالجِدِّ

أَبا العلا يا هلال الهَزل وَالجِدِّ

كَيفَ النُجومُ الَّتي تَطلعنَ في الجلدِ

كَيفَ النُجومُ الَّتي تَطلعنَ في الجلدِ

O Abu al-Ala, crescent of jest and earnestness,

O crescent moon of jest and earnestness,

How are the stars that rise in the skin?

How shine the stars imprinted on my skin?

وَباطِنُ الجِسمِ غَرٌّ مِثل ظاهِرِهِ

وَباطِنُ الجِسمِ غَرٌّ مِثل ظاهِرِهِ

وَأَنتَ تعلمُ مِما قُلتُه قَصدي

وَأَنتَ تعلمُ مِما قُلتُه قَصدي

And the body's interior is white, like its exterior;

My body hides a cave like that it wears,

And you know my intent from what I have said.

And you know well the meaning of my words.
