قُلتُI said وَقدand when قيلَit was said بَداappeared شِعرُهُhis hair
قُلتُ وَقد قيلَ بَدا شِعرُهُ
بِمِثلِof the like of ذاكَthat الشِعرِthe hair لاnot يُشعَرُis noticed
بِمِثلِ ذاكَ الشِعرِ لا يُشعَرُ
I said, when told his hair had appeared:
I said, though it was said his poetry
“Hair like that is hardly noticed.
Showed with that poetry he had no poetic gift.
هَلdoes زَغَبُsoft down الحُسنِbeauty لَهُto him ضائِرٌharmful
هَل زَغَبُ الحُسنِ لَهُ ضائِرٌ
ذاthis القَمرُthe moon التمُّfull بِهِwith it يَقمُرُoutshines
ذا القَمرُ التمُّ بِهِ يَقمُرُ
Does beauty’s soft down do him any harm?
Does the brushwood of beauty have harmful thorns
This full moon outshines others with it.”
When the moon-like one is perfected by it?
