I bid farewell to your exalted presence,

And my soul—not my tear—is streaming.

And who can bid farewell to this noble presence

And enjoy well-being after leaving it?

A noble presence where I grazed in a garden,

Whose fruits of generosity hang within reach.

There I saw outpourings of greatness,

And was taught what lofty aspirations are.

As though I were Baghdad in her longing

For you, and in her flowing tears.

And you are the one looked to for fulfilling

    Her hopes, and my own.

And if you would permit me to journey,

Then I would travel among the retinue.

I would precede your steed the length of the road,

And go with the saddle-cover in my hand.
