تَعَرَّفتُ بِالعَدلِ في مَذهَبي

تَعَرَّفتُ بِالعَدلِ في مَذهَبي

وَدانَ بِحُسنِ جِدالي العراق

وَدانَ بِحُسنِ جِدالي العراق

I became known for justice in my creed.

I became acquainted with justice in my creed

And Iraq acknowledged the excellence of my arguments.

And Iraq was impressed by my good disputation

فَكُلِّفتُ في الحُبِ ما لَم أُطِق

فَكُلِّفتُ في الحُبِ ما لَم أُطِق

فَقُلتُ بِتَكليف ما لا يُطاق

فَقُلتُ بِتَكليف ما لا يُطاق

Then, in love, I was charged with what I could not bear.

So I was assigned in love what I could not endure

So I professed belief in imposing what cannot be borne.

And I said, "To assign what cannot be endured is unjust"
